#20 Workshops/Talks related to Diversity and Inclusion for Fedora Community
Closed: Moved 6 years ago Opened 7 years ago by bee2502.

We usually conduct talks related to diversity and inclusion at conferences and events like Fedora Women's Day. However, only event attendees are able to join.

Is it possible to have monthly workshop or talk series focused towards Diversity and Inclusion for Fedora community ? This would also help us in marketing, spreading awareness and outreach while generating content.

Here are possible themes for talks and videos :
* A day in life of a Fedora contributor
Fedora contributors going about their everyday life - while also answering a few questions like how they started contributing to Fedora, challenges they faced, how/where/when they usually contribute and the areas, what they love about Fedora.

  • Talks can be about 'How to foster inclusion in your team' , 'How to engage with new contributors' , a talk about CoC what is ideal - what is not etc.

Workshops

I would specifically like to conduct Imposter Syndrome workshop and unconscious bias workshop for underrepresented groups in our community.

More info about Imposter Syndrome here : http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Impostor_syndrome

Technical Challenges

The videos and talks could be filmed by anyone with a video camera. Unlike #9 video editing wouldn't be a issue here as we are not merging multiple videos.

However, we still need to evaluate, strategize and understand if this fits in our current goals or is something to look at later.

I did not under the context here, why videos are mentioned here for workshop?
Are these events are workshop are targeted for some particular Fedora event? Who is going to be target audience here and which Diversity goal we would like to achieve with this one.

Trying understanding more, so that I can see the possibility of contributing here.

These are suggestions for creating video content for Fedora YouTube channel related to diversity and inclusion. Talks, contributor videos are all video content which will be uploaded online so that any Fedora community member can watch them. The main goal of these videos is not just to create awareness about diversity Fedora community but also enable the Fedora contributors to foster diversity and inclusion in their teams. Enabling Fedora contributors by providing them these video resources is crucial as the diversity team cannot micromanage every Fedora subproject to make the overall community diverse and inclusive. By watching these videos, contributors can learn what are good practices/ bad practices which foster diversity and inclusion. This approach also makes diversity and inclusion in community sustainable in the long term. I see this as one way Diversity and Inclusion team positively interacts with different parts of Fedora.

The videos will mainly be of two types,

  • Creating awareness of diverse Fedora community

We can do this by having videos of Fedora contributors from different locations, contributing to different teams. The videos will have a common theme "A day in life of a Fedora contributor " . With this videos, I want to show that Fedora community is very diverse - some re RH employees/ some not, some have small kids, some are students, some are in Asia while some in Europe etc. With this videos, we will not have the video editing issue as we do not need to merge different clips. It is just one video (hopefully, one to two minutes long) and anyone with video camera can film it.

  • Educating Fedora community about Diversity and Inclusion and How to foster diversity and inclusion in their community.

This videos will mostly be talks on topics like 'What does diversity and inclusion mean?', 'How to foster inclusion in your team' , 'How to engage with new contributors' etc. For example, see this talk 'Humanizing amongst coders' which talks about how communication between open source contributors should be

Link to talk : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npyB5Oz-v-I&index=4&list=PLyde45Tox-NfsQYj0AuToQNQehYIItZg6

Ideally these talks should be short too.

Till now, I am only explaining about talks. Now, I want to focus on workshops. Workshops will be with Fedora contributors from underrepresented communities. Workshops can be conducted online or in events. I would prefer online so as to include everyone. They should be related to enabling these contributors so that they can contributor successfully in Fedora.

One possible idea for this workshop is Imposter Syndrome. More info about Imposter Syndrome is here : http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Impostor_syndrome
Simply put, people feel like they are a fraud and do not deserve their achievements. This is especially common amongst people from underrepresented communities. This workshop will help them get over Imposter Syndrome and contribute successfully to the project.

I am open to other idea suggestions for workshops and talks.

@amsharma Does this help ?

Similar topic was brought up in the discussion about the appreciation day/week - I suggested video interviews with contributors, or in greater picture it would be part of bigger effort, such as "Fedora podcast" or bi-weekly thing on youtube aimed towards the Fedora community. The topics would range from Diversity related to technical ones, from panels to interviews. If I had reasonable voice I would be already doing it ;)

@rhea I would love to see those videos. But as I understood after we talked, this is a long term plan (F27 or beyond). Pending discussion on #9, we can decide if we want to do this immediately - especially related to Diversity and Inclusion and if we want to these to be integrated with CommOps videos.

Personally, I think, instead of tagging videos with CommOps or diversity , we should integrate them by a theme - i.e. all videos on theme 'A day in life of Fedora contributor' could be together and their production could be managed by CommOps and/or Diversity - depending on resources and how the videos fit into the broader goal.

That was something i wanted to do myself, as such it remains just a mere idea while I am busy.

I think the diversity video helps in spreading awareness about diversity in Fedora community.

What do you think of having talks/ series of talks on topics like 'How to foster inclusion in your team' , 'How to engage with new contributors' , 'CoC what is ideal - what is not' etc. ? This will help in Educating Fedora community about Diversity and Inclusion and how every individual can help.

As a first step for these, we can generate these talks from research and insights generated from answers to 'Share Fedora' Magazine posts -

https://fedoramagazine.org/share-fedora-difficult-conversations/
https://fedoramagazine.org/share-fedora-existing-community/
https://fedoramagazine.org/share-fedora-encouraging-new-contributors/

As a retrospective, I would love for us to collaborate with the Fedora Classroom folks on some of these topics, now that the Classrooms are getting back up and started.

I can help with conducting a Fedora Classroom session, if somebody could guide me on how to do it. @x3mboy what do you think?

This is one of our older tickets. I suggest closing this ticket and filing a new one for a specific action we want to do (like organizing a Fedora Classroom session). Does that sound okay?

+1, is way better to have specific tickets rather than old tickets with a lot of comments because we lose track and can be messy sometimes

Time to plan - which all major events we want to target.

The main aim for this ticket was to create accessible web content in two broad areas

  1. To showcase the diversity and inclusion in Fedora community
  2. To create guidelines and resources to build a diverse and inclusive community

I think we achieved our goals for the first part with the community videos. However, we still have a long way to go on the second one. I am +1 to creating individual tickets related to second part. i.e. Fedora classroom sessions from D&I team, collecting best practices for building inclusive teams. But we should close this ticket only after we have finalized these new tasks, opened their respective tickets and begun working on them. Otherwise it will just lead to the same discussion on the new tickets.

@bee2502 would you like to open smaller, more focused sub-tickets for this one, so that we can have a fresh start along with the information here. Discussion here kind of lost the track and seems pretty old. Thanks.

Issue #31 is about this. However, we need to decide how to move forward. We can continue our discussion there.

Issue #60 talks about Fedora Classroom sessions and guidelines. We can close this.

Thanks. Closing this one.
