Describe what you would like us to do:

Goal: integrate Fedora Discussion notifications into the new overall notification system

Implementation:

Discourse can fire a webhook whenever a notification is generated. We have an existing webhook that sends some information to fedora-messaging, but not these, since they are personal. So, we'd either need the FMN replacement to accept these webhooks directly, or possibly to deliver them via the non-public message bus.

However, that's an insider detail. Users should just see them as another source of notifications, and be able to configure the output as they like.

When do you need this to be done by? (YYYY/MM/DD)

It would be nice to see this shortly after the initial FMN-replacement deployment, while that project is still fresh in the team's minds.

@mattdm We already did investigation for Webhook to fedora messaging which could be a good way to implement this initiative. What do you think?

I am not sure what options Fedora Messaging has for private delivery. I don't think we want messages on the public bus.

And there's also this — https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/issue/10954

If those can be resolved, that seems like a fine approach.

Wouldn't be better to just use e-mail notifications from Discource for these private deliveries? Even FMN is taking fedora messaging bus as main source of notifications.

@abompard Is there any option for private deliveries in fedora messaging as mentioned by @mattdm?

I'm also not sure if this is really a mini-initiative, it looks to me like a complete new notification system that will live alongside current fedora messaging.

Wouldn't be better to just use e-mail notifications from Discource for these private deliveries?

That already exists, of course, but there are several reasons this would be nice in addition:

  1. Email is increasingly messy, and for a lot of people used more a "deal with it when I have time" bucket than a place for notifications.
  2. For Gmail users in particular, there is an annoying problem: Gmail doesn't let you filter on arbitrary headers, so you can't use X-Discourse-Tags and X-Discourse-Category.
  3. I think it'd be nice to be able to group all Fedora-related notifications into one system, so it's all in one place. (I definitely wouldn't want a new notification system!)

I'll echo Matthew's comment. As a GMail (native) user, filtering Discourse notifications is entirely broken.

But also, it would be nice to receive chat notifications of certain events, either privately or in a channel.
