#68 Diversity Team Presence at OSCAL
Closed 7 years ago Opened 7 years ago by bee2502.

@jonatoni and I will be attending OSCAL conference in Albania this year. @jflory7 and @amsharma might be there too. The audience at OSCAL includes a lot of female students from all over Albania and Kosovo. I feel that it will be great to have some small session so that we are able to onboard atleast some new contributors during OSCAL. Additionally, it can be a good opportunity to interact with contributors from other open source communities to learn from their D&I initiatives and possibly collaborate together. Let me know what you think!

The audience at OSCAL is unique because of the gender ratio. In 2016, JirĂ Eischmann reported 50% of attendees were female. Last year, I did not record attendee ratio, but I found it to be largely the same.

One of my accepted sessions is a Fedora meet-up. If there is a presence of any Diversity Team members, it would be a good opportunity to interact with attendees there. Last year, the meet-up was framed more for existing contributors. This year, I hoped to frame it more towards attendees as an opportunity to engage and meet existing contributors. A Fedora Women angle could be nice to include, but needs more thought of how it would be implemented.

We will be having Fedora meetup which Justin is organizing, we can have this session during that meetup along with our video broadcast

Do you have any ideas on what we can do?

We decided that we can have a hackathon running during OSCAL and whoever makes a contribution to Fedora can win a T-shirt. We can help people with this at booth. This doesnt require any extra space. And we can have a flyer with some example tasks for first contribution.

@jonatoni might have more ideas on this.

Need approval from team for FW stickers for OSCAL

Discussed in 2018-04-27 meeting.

OSCAL: 75 stickers

We agreed to allocate 75 Fedora Women stickers for OSCAL 2018.

More for FWD distribution?

Many team members will be present at once at OSCAL. It could make for a good distribution point for Fedora Women Day events, if we wanted to send more stickers to OSCAL and then save on shipping costs later. However, to follow past precedent, we should get specific estimates for each FWD event or how the stickers will be used before adding more.

We also noted that @bex may attend and he could bring the stickers with him from Brno to save shipping.

There are currently about 600 stickers in Brno, most belong to the Diversity team - the others can be reappopriated and replaced.

There are also some in RDU that belong to others but could be reappropriated and replaced. They aren't really relevant for this conversation though.

Discussed in 2018-05-04 meeting.

Holding off for post-OSCAL stickers

We won't worry about this right now. We'll wait until we're better organized for FWD ( #66 ) to make a request.

Pre-OSCAL objectives

Our two biggest goals to plan for success at OSCAL are:

  1. Plan for Fedora meet-up and how to run it during OSCAL
  2. Plan the contribution challenge and how to run it ( #72 )

Ticket #72 requires the most pre-planning. More information about the contribution challenge is in #72. The Fedora meet-up will be easier to plan for. We wanted to work with @jonatoni to see if we could a Fedora sweet (e.g. a cake) in time for OSCAL, and we could use that as a draw to have conversations with attendees who are not already in the Fedora community.

We had a Fedora 28 release party during community meetup at OSCAL. We also ran the hack challenge - more details on that in #72. Some event reports from diversity team members are here:

I am closing this ticket since the conference is over.
