#32 Fedora Women Day 2017: Magazine / CommBlog posts
Closed: Complete 6 years ago Opened 6 years ago by jflory7.

This ticket is related to #26.

Summary

To help promote Fedora Women Day (FWD), we want to write a few articles to help promote the event and inform organizers on the Magazine and Community Blog.

Explanation

Helping promote FWD on the Magazine will build general awareness for the event and help build interest in the event. This will help us have a wider outreach and hopefully connect with more people inside and maybe even outside of our community too.

A CommBlog article will help inform event organizers about important details to put together an event in their region, either physical or virtual. It will also help keep everyone on the same page and make sure regular procedures for event organizing (via Ambassadors) are followed in time.

This conversation was a little longer in #26, but moving here to help separate it from the many comments on the other ticket!

@marianab Awesome, happy to hear you are interested in helping with this! Also, I would recommend saying hello and introducing yourself on the mailing list, so we all can get to know you too.

I'm commenting on the existing plans for the content from a Magazine / CommBlog point-of-view (mostly in #26). I have a few suggestions.

Magazine: "Fedora fans, check this out!"

Looking at the current Etherpad for the Fedora Magazine article, I think it's looking good so far and will help raise awareness. However, I would suggest us focusing only on awareness for the Fedora Magazine article. I don't think we should put any organizing details into the Magazine. Instructions or support on how to organize a local event are best placed into a CommBlog article. What will be good for the Magazine is to build awareness that the event is happening and how an interested person can find a way to participate (by attending a local event or virtual event).

As an example to help while writing, pretend you are going to the Fedora Users mailing list or the #fedora IRC channel and asking folks there to help organize a Fedora Women Day. While they are likely interested in Fedora, they probably know much of the details of organizing a Fedora event or what the procedure is. It could be frustrating if they try to do this but aren't familiar with details of how to organize something or if they see they need to be an Ambassador to organize it.

I'd like to focus the end of the article on connecting readers to participation opportunities (or where to follow along for more news) and put helpful, organizational details into the CommBlog (and we can surely point to the wiki there too). In this way, writing the CommBlog article might be more helpful to do first.

CommBlog: "Ambassadors, check this out!"

The CommBlog post would be best for putting the organizer details and information into. The CommBlog version is the one that we want to write for Ambassadors, where we say, :mega: "Hey Ambassadors, check out this event coming up and how you can help plan one!"

This is where we would want to include some of the more detailed information that is in the article draft now. Things like where to put the event template, when to confirm participation as an event owner, where to get support or follow details about the FWD, and more.

Hopefully this all makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions about anything I brought up.

Please let's publish article on commblog which is ready (by @marianab ) asap, because people will need time to organize the event. I am waiting for this article to be published for sending announcement mail (will share the draft soon).
I can draft the article for magazine later and we can do it in some time, if this article needs to be different.

Also, we can include a note that if at all September is not possible and people can do it before or after September (they can do it).

and @jflory7 the FWD ticket is still really shorter than many of the existing tickets in Fedora Pagure :) Let's try to keep things at one place rather than creating pointers. It will be easier for next time too and easy to refer.

*doesn't like the mystery titles...*

doesn't like the mystery titles...
hey how are you :) , sorry did not get your point.

Oh it just says "check this out" without mentioning what am i clicking... I personally would rather see a descriptive title.

I think that those titles were referred about the mission of the articles, not the actual titles, but ok.

I was checking the commblog and I didn't see the article even in drafts, I can take the hit of putting it in, or we are waiting for something else?

@x3mboy we need to make some changes on the article, would be great if you can help us to finish and publish the article asap. If you have time you can coordinate with @marianab about this.

@amsharma The current draft looked good to me for the Community Blog, but I definitely want to make sure we know what instructions we're giving to Ambassadors before we publish this. See my comment here.

Yeah, this was meant for explaining purposes, not for actual titles. :grinning: Sorry for the confusion.

So… the Community Blog is in a sad state right now. :pensive: As of now, the editor is in an unusable state, and it isn't possible to type into the editor at all (see this ticket for more info). In the meanwhile, the best workaround might be to pop it into the Magazine, get it to look the way we want it there, and then I can manually insert the raw HTML from the Magazine into the Community Blog… a pain, but this will work. It's how I've been publishing the articles this week.

@jflory7 I use the WordPress app, so I can edit without problems, you can give it a try.

For the record Community Blog post link - https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/organizing-fedora-women-day-2017/

Do we want to close this issue or I guess we would like to do magazine post and event report posts as well? Thoughts? @jflory7 @jonatoni

@x3mboy will you help us with the Fedora Magazine article? I agree with what Justin suggested to include in the article, 20 August we will know all the FWD events that will be organized so we can include them in the article. I think that at least end of August the article should be published, what do you think @amsharma @jflory7 @bee2502 @x3mboy @chhavi?

Yes, I think it's better to close it after posting the magazine article and the event reports

 Let's get the following done to close this ticket…

  1. Magazine article (any time after Aug. 20)
  2. Follow up on organizer event reports (by end of September)

Then I think we should be good to close this.

Articles:

Now I'm collecting all FWD reports and in the end I will write a report including all FWD local events.

Here are the event reports from FWD organizers https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_Women_Day_2017#Event_reports

I will work to gather all of them in one and publish on CommBlog.

@jonatoni has a draft for the wrap-up post in an Etherpad. I'm going to spend time this weekend reviewing and helping her get it into the CommBlog to publish sometime next week.

@jonatoni is finishing the draft for "10 Fedora Women Days across the world" in the CommBlog now. A preview is available here (note: you must log in first to see the preview). Jona can update us once it's pending final review.

Actually, it is ready to be published, I don't know if someone else want to change/add something.
