It would be great for Fedora events to have diversity-themed swag, maybe stickers using a rainbow.

We have done Fedora Women stickers, but this is the most we have done. It would be nice to branch out to other demographics though. A Fedora Pride sticker would be awesome.
This is one reason I still want the demographic survey in #62 because that type of demographic data would be useful for strategically planning what swag we create instead of putting on a blindfold and throwing darts at what we think we should promote though.
@jflory7 Agreed, Having a Fedora Pride Sticker would be awesome but having a demographic survey sound a great idea by that we would have the ability to plan things accordingly.
IMHO it would be nice to also have something that does not target a specific demographic but is more like a "catch all message" like "all creatures welcome".
+1 @till , Having a general-kind sticker which doesn't target a specific demographic is a Great Idea, I especially liked the "All creatures welcome"
@till My experience with inclusion work is that catch-all messages either (1) have a weak call-to-action, or (2) end up narrowly excluding a group that somehow doesn't fit into the catch-all message.
For example, if we find out there is a very large group of Fedora contributors in the Czech Republic, the D&I Team could work the Design Team and regional Advocates/Ambassadors in the Czech Republic to produce a more personalized swag for that specific area. I think the personalization of swag will have a greater impact when we attach it strategically to local events organized by existing Fedora community members.
This ticket made me start to wonder what the Fedora logo would look like crossed with the Mexican or Czech flags. :)
@till @jflory7 @nasirhm we have these: https://twitter.com/JenInnovate/status/1159793021061357568/photo/1 and I send them out with swag requests. Currently we have about a 1000 left. Do we want to create another design? That is totally an option, I just wanted to make sure you are aware of these :)
@jflory7 I learned through my work with badges, that using flags is legally complicated so we avoid that :(
Or, some sort of Fedora Pakistan sticker and branding assets for someone like @nasirhm to use while building a local community of Fedora enthusiasts in his country. :)
Actually I did forget about these but I love them and I think they are great! I forget about them sometimes since they didn't pass through the D&I team's usual channels (mailing list, Pagure tickets, IRC/Telegram). I have also gotten great feedback on these stickers from other folks at conferences other than just me too. They are good conversation starters!
True. Flags are just one way to represent a large group of people that identify together on a common symbol. But we don't have to let that limit us.
Now I wonder what the Fedora logo looks like crossed with Albanian baklava. :cake: :yum: Or maybe I'm just hungry…
These one's are my most favourite one's which marie sent for the Release Party, The one i loved the most was "The Best Communities are Diverse & Inclusive", That is one of the reasons i love Fedora.
I would like to suggest having a different design to for the D&I would be awesome and having a design to represent every group like @till suggested All Creatures Welcome sounds like a great idea.
All Creatures Welcome
In Pakistan, I have some awesome lanyards by Fedora sent by @riecatnor for the Release Party and they're still kept in the same box, as they weren't used for the Event, Having some Swag stored in Pakistan probably by me or some other contributor is a Great idea.
Just as a note, there is effort started in the last 2 years to change the 6 color rainbow flags in the LGBT community to be 8 colors, cf https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/06/12/designer-gives-pride-flag-an-inclusive-makeover/ or https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/01/10/manchester-pride-flag-black-brown/ . It is likely too soon to however see a change, and I kinda do not expect that before 3 or 4 years IMHO.
As for "All creatures welcome", that's (to me) already associated with CCC: https://media.ccc.de/v/all_creatures_welcome .
And I am quite sure that not while I understand the intent behind the slogan, I think that not all creatures should be welcome, as we have a CoC that kinda rightfully say that not everything is welcome. I kinda feel that this would send mixed signals.
Hmm @misc , Sounds right, How about finding some new slogan with finding a sweet spot between Fedora CoC and All creatures welcome like Kind Creatures Welcome or something new.
Kind Creatures Welcome
Yes, this is the positive example where I got this from.
The CoC is about behavior not people, so IMHO all people are welcome but not all a behavior.
Not sure if it really works (since I am not a native speaker) but an alternative might be "you are welcome (here)".
Thank you for the info. It's certainly the direction I am looking for. I am not sure that they convey the message that I am looking for except for "The best communities are inclusive and diverse." Also, to me "all creatures welcome" seems to be a better punchline. Since @jflory7 had a better experience with them, it seems that the general idea works and I am in favor of having more of them than nothing at all.
What kind of "call-to-action" message are you thinking of? My idea would be to have something to show (a sticker) as a conversation starter that attracts people who care about diversity and inclusion or shows everyone who felt rejected/excluded in other communities that Fedora would be a community that embraces them. Bonus points if it also rejects people who do not care about diversity and inclusion.
What is the impact you envision here?
Commenting only about slogan-- what about using our tried and true "We are Fedora"
It is a good idea. To fit the purpose that I see it would need some extra info that "we" is diverse and inclusive. For example, I think the video had different people from different areas say "I am Fedora". Otherwise it might also be seen as "We are Fedora but you are not".
This is how Fedora diversity looks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1eHRoEps6I
This Video is really awesome, Adding something like "We are Fedora & You can be too !!" can represent more for what D&I stands for. Amazing job tatica for the Video.
I think design#683 is a good example of work the D&I team can lead on areas like this ticket.
Circling back to this ticket. There were two things mentioned in the comments that I think are sufficient for this ticket:
I propose closing this ticket as moved and opening a new Mindshare ticket for Fedora Pride stickers using the new Pride logo in design#683.
moved
Any objections to this course of action?
@jwf +1
@jflory7++
sounds good to me.
I have created the ticket in mindshare (https://pagure.io/mindshare/issue/249) but I can't close this due to lack of access. Someone with access, please mark it moved
