#899 Badge idea: Join Fedora Graduate
Opened a year ago by mattdm. Modified a year ago

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):

"You've completed the "Welcome to Fedora" process!"

1) What are those activities?

Completing the process here https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-join/welcome/welcome/

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)

No longer newcomers!

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)

Get more involved -- and looking for the next steps

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)

Once!

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)

A bunch of stuff.

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?

Not really!

by using a web interface?)

A bunch of stuff.

Would that be a bunch of verifiable stuff that the current rule syntax is capable of describing? Or would some kind of mentor check and award the badge?

For the artwork, the name is a good idea for starting. Maybe one of the Fedora friends (panda, badger etc.) as a graduate in a graduation hat and gown?

that would mean designing a panda in hat and gown??

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel i wish to contribute to this ticket

hi @riecatnor @smeragoel here is what i worked on today concerning this issu

hi @riecatnor @smeragoel. i made another variants from the design that i made yesterday, i discovered that it does really do well for the panda to only wear graduating cap, so i included a gown and made the panda holding a scroll.
please kindly review

I think that we are suppose to use the existing Fedora characters.

Great start everyone, here are some notes!

@kavyaaaa
- I really like it! I would maybe try experimenting with the colour of the gown, as rn it is sort of blending with the badger. You can also make the lining on the gown thicker to make it pop!
- I think it'd be nice to have the badger holding a degree scroll instead of a ribbon
- The background doesn't work for this badge because it looks like the badger is floating in space. maybe try an illustration of a podium on a stage?

@dejipot
- This is a very nice illustration, but for Fedora Badges, we already have some preexisting character designs for Pandas, Badgers etc. I'd suggest going through the Badge Design Doc here: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/badges/design-badges/ This will help you understand the Badges design style better!

Looking forward to seeing the next iterations :D

Hi folks! Thanks for all the work on this ticket :) notes below

@falyne before going further on the designs, I would suggest reviewing the Badges style guide to get a better understanding of how to design badges. I would also suggest reviewing the library of badges we have on the explore page of the Badges website. I think this will help you on your badge design path :)
- the grey area showing in your badges is the "badge design" area- you can just make that object the color you want your background to be and work with that.
- Try simplifying the design and make sure that none of the elements are hard to see
- Use a stroke of 1.5 pixels if you choose to use a stroke on an object
- Work on making the composition a bit more interesting.. for example with the badger holding up the diploma, I would crop to just see the top half of the badger so you could make it more clear what it is holding
- Try to avoid the color black (yes I know the badger has black, but otherwise we do our best to avoid it if we can)

@dejipot nice progression here from your first try at the design :) some notes for you:
- I think you made some change to the template, make sure you leave the template as is and just create art in the center grey area. I think it would be helpful for you to review the Style Guide and the existing library of badges as I recommended to @falyne in my comments above.
- Since this is a Fedora Join graduate, I think we can avoid so much black in the design by using the Fedora blues for the graduate robes :)
- All elements of the design should be vectors.. I noticed the scroll looks pixelated so I opened the svg and found it is a bitmap. Make sure that any art you are using is created by you, or remixed from previous badge designs. Since we don't have room to give attributions in the small space we are working with, its important that we as Fedora designers create the art ourselves. There is a cool looking scroll in Fedora badges that you could work with as a base, check out this ticket
- I am not sure what the ribbon is meant to signify, but I think the graduate cap/gown and diploma are getting the concept across :) let's take the ribbon out
- Based on that, I think you can work a bit on the composition- center the badger, maybe make it a bit bigger or crop the bottom half?
- Try either adding a pattern or an illustration to the background

Hi @kavyaaaa nice work here :) Some notes for you:
- Like the previous feedback I gave to you on a different ticket: make sure to upload PNG and SVGs and use the template (export at 256x256 pixels)
- Are you using the Fedora and Badges color palettes? I think they would be useful to you and everyone designing badges, you can find them here. Use some Fedora blues for the gown and cap, and the Fedora orange for the zipper. For the strokes I would choose darker variations on the colors instead of black
- Its kind of hard to make out the diploma, I would make that a bit bigger
- The confetti is nice, but it feels out of place next to the badger art.. I think because it doesn't have a stroke.. here's an approved badge design with confetti, try taking some inspiration from that :)
- The podium seems a bit out of place.. maybe because it is without a stroke? I think there is also high contrast on the gradient.. try adding a stroke and making that gradient softer
- The background feels empty... not sure if you want to add a pattern in or maybe add some more illustration? I think that needs experimentation :)

Hope this review has been helpful, I look forward to your next drafts!

hi @riecatnor based on the review, i made changes to the template while also enlarging the image to fit the middle, the cloth was also change to fedora blue. the scroll was made from scratch all in svg. looking forward to the next iteration

Hey designers, thank you for your work. Here's my review:

@dejipot:
- I like the idea of the background, but I think it makes the badge very busy, especially with the ribbon and the scroll. I'd suggest experimenting with the background, reducing the number of elements and size of the panda. I'd say you can remove the ribbon altogether.
- The stroke on the gown should be thicker. I'd also suggest adding a darker stroke instead of a lighter stroke. I quite like the design in this comment.

@falyne:
- I'd suggest you review the Badges style guide to understand the style and feel of Fedora Badges - there is a characteristic thick stroke, a particular colour palette etc.
- Use the Fedora colour palette, I think the colours you have used here are a bit too saturated and neon-y

@kavyaaaa:
- very cute, I like it!
- I think the confetti is a nice touch, however, it is a bit too busy. Let's reduce the quantity
- Let's reduce size of the badger just a bit and make the scroll bigger and more prominent

Looking forward to your next drafts :)

Hi @riecatnor and @smeragoel thankyou for the feedback. Here is the revised design.

Hi designers, these are looking better :sunglasses: feedback below!

@falyne notes for you:
- I think the template is off here for the badge design area.. it looks like the spacing is off at the top between the badge design area and the pink ring
- It looks like your confetti layer got moved to the left some as it is out of the badge design area on the left side and the crop is off on the right side
- I think the badger got a bit too short/small, I would make that a bit bigger/taller.. the badgers head might be a bit squished too?
- The diploma is going outside of the badge design area as well.. readjust the elements so everything fits inside of the badge design area and looks well balanced

Hi @dejipot notes for you:
- I think the background is a bit distracting.. I think it fits with the concept so maybe just reduce the opacity or choose a lighter color?
- the confetti is blending in with the background.. try making those Fedora colors and adding strokes
- The diploma is blending in a bit as well, I would increase the stroke and choose a different color for that- maybe a brown color?
- The sleeves look a bit uneven.. on the left side it is small, on the right side it is big.. if you are trying to show that it is hanging off the badgers arm, add in a line and a shadow to show the draping
- I am not sure what the shape is on the bottom of the yellow collar.. I think you can simplify this by removing that, or by making it into a circle

@kavyaaaa this is getting very close :smile: one note for you:
- I think the badgers head got a bit squished somewhere along the way.. make sure its matching the other badge designs on the explore page

Looking forward to your next drafts!

thank you @riecatnor I implemented the changes as suggested

Nice work, folks! Feedback below :100:

@kavyaaaa great job on this! Before I approve designs, I go in and check the PNGs and SVGs. I noticed one small thing.. the wavy lines pattern is slightly off of the background (there is a gap at the top). Please adjust that so it is aligned well, and this will be complete

@dejipot good improvements here :smile: notes for you:
- the confetti is looking a bit stiff, exactly the same size, shape, and orientation. Try some variation in the confetti to make it look natural. I would also try some different colors, maybe lighter colors?
- The background isn't as distracting, anymore! I do think that the green sky is a bit strange :alien: maybe try blue there?
- The gown looks tight fitting on the badgers stomach, I would suggest editing the vectors to look like its flowing off the badger
- The arm of the gown on the right looks better.. the one on the left looks a little unnatural, try smoothing that bottom area out

@falyne nice improvements here! notes for you:
- I think the badger is still looking squished. Maybe try re-importing a badger head into your file
- The wavy lines are not aligned with the background, make sure there are no gaps there

Looking forward to the next drafts!
