#826 "First time" translation badges
Opened 2 years ago by nattes. Modified a year ago

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):
- You added your first translation - global village fan!

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
-translating website pages in other languages increasing potential outreach to non English speaking contributors

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
-newcomers

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
-so that people not speaking English can understand what is Fedora, increasing diversity among contributors

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
- first translation (once)

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)
-webtranslate

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
-nope (sorry) or maybe pandas dancing around the earth?

I am not sure this does not allready exist - sorry if it does!

Hi, I would like to try this." first time, translation badge @greenwings23

should I close this as "declined" ?

Hi @nattes the badges team has been mostly inactive in the last year or two, apologies this has sat for so long. We should see some activity here as we have an upcoming badges design internship. The only badges we have for translations so far are for translation sprints, so I think this is a great idea!

I wonder if its possible to make this into a series of badges for translation: 1, 10, 25, 50, 100 translations completed. The art could be a panda with a speech bubble showing "translation" similar to the i18n test day badge [0]?

[0] https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/f35-i18n-test-day-participant

Wow well yes making it 1,10,25 ect would be great :). I Maybe the panda could be clothed in bright colors with flags picturing the top ten language fedoran use ?
I am sure you are more competent in design than I am so I will leave to you to choose the panda.
Thank you for answering mad explaining the delay.

Let's make it a series then! :)

I love the idea of dressing the panda up, but we are limited around flags in our designs.. we can use elements/colors that are reminiscent of flags but can't directly represent flags. maybe we could include a globe in the design to represent the international part of the badge concept?

I have an idea as well, if we could have a panda wearing a flower crown holding the world in his hands.., reason: we are giving them a flower crown because they are keeping the world together.. @riecatnor @nattes
do send in feedback for this concept, i can then try designing one :)

Hi @harshita12 I think it's a cute idea- the idea of the panda holding the world is nice, but I am not sure about the flower crown. I would say go ahead and design your idea and we can go from there

I am also curious what @nattes thinks as they opened the ticket :)

Nice ! Really glad to see it moving forward :)

Wonder if the background should not be in another color if the earth is blue and green ? But I am not gifted in visual design so I would not trust my own advice there.

you are right @nattes i did have the same thought while designing it, wondered if while border around the earth would make it better, and it didn't, guess the bg will be needing the change! will revert back with a new bg soon :)

also, what category does this badge belong to..? I just assumed community ;-;

I have no idea about that :/ .

@riecatnor @smeragoel @nattes Hello! I took what @riecatnor said https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/826#comment-788043, and made a possible design? please let me know what you think of this.

Hiya folks! thanks for the work here :) notes below

@harshita12
- Really cute design so far! I will comment on your latest version.
- I think the darker background works here, though the blue of the globe is still blending in a bit. Try different shades of blue, maybe something closer to a sky blue? You could also create an "atmosphere" by adding a small glow around the globe
- The "1" is overpowering the design because it is so big and bright.. I would suggest making the panda/globe slightly larger and centering it more, as well as decreasing the size of the "1" and finding a less conspicuous placement

@ikumena nice start!
- The panda color and shape is looking a bit weird- I would change that to one of the main 6 fedora colors and make sure it looks similar to past designs
- I see a green object covering the bottom half- does that represent something? Its hard to tell right now, but I think you can remove that. I would suggest making the globe a bit smaller as well and playing with the blue so it stands out from the background
- I would change the "translation" text to l10n as that is how they shorten the name:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N
- I would suggest make the number separate from the bubble. I would also recommend trying a stroke on the bubble - not sure that will look good but its good to explore.

Looking forward to the next drafts!

@harshita12:
- I like how it's coming along!
- The orange on the panda seems a bit faded out. Are you using the correct colour from the Fedora colour palette?
- The 1 is too close to the edge right now. I'm wondering if we can place it on the globe itself? Try experimenting with that.

@ikumena:
- The template seems a bit wonky. Make sure you are exporting it at 256x256 px at 96 dpi. I'd suggest importing the artwork into a fresh template.
- The 'l10n' doesn't stand out properly against the background.
- The 1 is too close to the edge, and the stroke width doesn't seem right. Look at the style guide for reference.
- The panda is too close to the left edge. Try moving it away and also play around with the size.
- Not sure about the colour of the thought cloud. Right now, it seems very heavy.

Tagging @smeragoel and @riecatnor in line with the updated guidance for submitting contributions.

Hi @rolandixor thanks for starting work on this one! Some notes for you:
- Before I give suggestions to improve your design, I want to point out that the previous art created is a really great start, and you could just work to improve that design and complete the series! We often build on each others designs, it is encouraged :)
- Now onto your design. I think the background is looking a bit dark- its space so that makes sense, but i think you could make the area around the world lighter, to a dark blue and then black at the very edge of the design. Here's an example: 1. You could also take the world design from that badge if you wanted? up to you! You can find the original ticket on the Badge website page under "Criteria"
- The arms look a bit stiff and they should be the color of the panda, here's an example that you could remix: 1.
- I would suggest using the lighter Fedora orange for the panda, and the dark orange/brown for the stroke
- The dark orange on the speech bubble is blending in, I'd try a light grey or even the Fedora orange for that
- The l10n on the shirt is hard to see.. I am not sure its needed?
Looking forward to your next draft :)

Hi @riecatnor and @smeragoel,

Following up from the feedback, I decided to go with a remix of the existing artwork and reuse a panda from one of the other templates as well (just slightly modified).

I moved the number and globe and put the number in a circle.

Interested to know what you think.

Hi @rolandixor thanks for your work! Here's my feedback:

  • I like the artwork, but I'm not sure if it is successfully conveying the idea of translation. I think we should go back to the drawing board and look at ideas/previous work to inform our current design.
  • I like the artwork from this badge. We can use some additional inspiration to modify the badge design: I like the text bubbles of different languages here
    I'd suggest working in this direction, but obviously if you have any other ideas, please feel free to experiment :D

@rolandixor Hmm, I don't see a lot of difference from the previous iteration. The speech bubbles don't also fit the Badges aesthetic. We can make them much more natural by removing the sharp edges, maybe adding a lighter stroke for more contrast. You may also need to up the stroke width. Let's try different poses and different ideas as suggested in my previous review and then we can discuss further!

Thank you @rolandixor ! I am just droping in there : I think this last one does relate to "translation" more than the others :). I don't understand what the purple sign is though.

Hi @nattes. It's a symbol for "one" in another language. Unfortunately, I lost track of the original language from which the symbol is taken, so I'd like to try doing another draft with a different symbol.
