#647 New badge for submitting 'Contributor Story' - Fedora Appreciation Week
Opened 5 years ago by dhanesh95. Modified 10 months ago

Badge description:
- A contributor submitted a contributor story for Fedora Appreciation Week

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
- For submitting a contributor story (https://pagure.io/fedora-commops/contributor-stories)

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
- Anyone who is part of the Fedora community.

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
- As part of the Fedora Appreciation Week, we're trying to encourage people to submit stories about people from the community who inspired or helped them in their journey as a Fedora Community member.

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
- Throughout the year leading to the Fedora Appreciation Week

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)
- Web-interface. They'll be required to open a new issue against the contributor-stories repo.

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
- It would be cool to extent the metaphor used for the Happiness Packets badge.

Here is a draft for the contributor story badge. I chose to make another cupcake, based off of the happiness packets badge. Because who doesn't love cupcakes?! :)

I think it is possible to automate this badge by counting the number of issues opened by a user on the contributor-stories repository. I could try to write a rules file for the badge.

@riecatnor: I like the cupcake, but I wonder if there is a better way to connect the design to the messaging of the badge / activity. The hypothetical storyline is someone taking time to say something nice or share a positive memory about another person or the Fedora community. For this badge, I had an idea of using badgers or pandas, where one of them is pointing to the other as if to say, "Hey, look at this awesome person and the cool things they are doing!"

Additionally, I would like this badge to be part of a series so we could reuse it every year.

Hi @ooree thanks for the first draft! Unfortunately, the graphics are all kind of blending together. Try to simplify the design.
Make sure to look at the badges that exist to match the aesthetic, you can view them here:
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/explore/badges
Make sure to use the template, and export your png at 256x256 pixels.
Thanks!

@riecatnor I will also like to work on this issue

Hi @booky! Very happy to see your designs. I have a couple of suggestions:

  • The first draft doesn't connect to the badge. It seems more of a 'helping' design rather than an 'appreciating' design. The second draft also doesn't connect to the badge much, and the cutoff on the left panda doesn't fit the badge style guide.

  • I'd suggest looking up reference images for inspiration for your next version. Try searching for people appreciating/complimenting/praising other people. Here's a random picture I found that looks quite funny but captures the essence really well: https://bodylanguagecentral.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/man-complimenting.jpg

I am looking forward to your next draft!

@smeragoel Can i go outside the style guide (graphics) given to us and also including it into my design?

Hi! @riecatnor @smeragoel I had been waiting for review on other badges while I came across this. I made changes to panda configuration so I felt the same panda can be reused here. Let me know what you think

Hi @booky thanks for continuing work here. A couple suggestions for you:
- I would suggest reviewing the badges style guide and the "explore" page of badges to get a better understanding of the badge aesthetic
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/badges/_attachments/fedora-badges-style-guide.pdf
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/explore/badges
- Make sure you are using the correct colors for the pandas, they should be in one of the six main colors we use for badges and fedora design.
- Review how to clip designs in inkscape and try using that to make the panda on the right look more natural - right now it looks like a cut off ghostie!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFqDg086LbI&ab_channel=PhotoAdvanced2
- Add in one of the patterns to the background or come up with an illustration
Looking forward to your next draft!

Here's my first draft of this issue.

-> pandas appreciating the contributor, the thumbs are visible in the badge.

-> the panda is also given a cupcake as a reward, and he is shown happy :D

-> I'm not sure if @jflory7 wanting this to be a series meant that the year must be included, so every year, the year can be changed, hence I included the year.

Hi @riecatnor, here's my first draft contribution for the contributor story badge, please kindly review it.
The box with pencils symbolizes the tools used for the contribution. while they balloons symbolizes appreciation/ celebration.

@riecatnor and @smeragoel please review my first trial

Hi @beekaz thanks for starting work here! Some notes for you:
- Please upload both the SVG and PNG when you contribute a design, this helps a lot with the review process
- Looking at your SVG file, it looks like you are not using the template. Make sure to use the templates found on the how to design fedora badges docs page. Make sure you leave the template as is, and make no changes to the template. Make additions to the grey area. You can also find the style guide on that page, which will help you understand the "do's" and "don'ts" when designing badges :)
- Take a look at the explore page that shows all the badge designs, this will help you get an idea for the look and feel of badges
- This is a community badge, so it should have a pink outer ring
- Add a background color, and pattern to your design
- Make sure to keep the strokes consistent: either add strokes to all the objects, or to none, and keep the size of the stroke at 1.5 pixels or more and keep them consistent throughout the design
- Think about the concept for this badge, to tell a positive story about another Fedora contributor.. I think it would make sense to include a panda or badger in the design, it might be nice to use some previous art on this ticket or from the explore page I linked above as a starting place

Looking forward to your next draft!

Hi, a gentle bump on this ticket. We are approaching this ticket again for Fedora Appreciation Week 2023 next week. @jonatoni brought this ticket up and we would like to promote this activity with a badge. @ekidney is also a part of the Appreciation Week team and might be able to help on finishing up this ticket. Just commenting here so our plans are out in the open!

If we get the badge live later than next week, it is OK, but sooner is better than later if at all possible.

Are you sure this should be in a ticket that's aged better than a French cheese?

When I saw the notification in my mailbox I didn't think of a new badge request right away, because of the ticket number. Anyway, as soon as we have approved artwork, I can take care of pushing the badge.
