I tried three times to upload release tarballs for this project by clicking the ''Upload a new release'' button and selecting the tarballs (separately or together); it failed every time, with a message ''Upload failed''. The tarballs are in .tar.xz format.

Yeah and the error is wrong, what it failed at was creating the folder (mkdir vs mkdir -p sort of).
