#246 Policy decision: Do we or do we not support/ list non free tools in NeuroFedora (from RPMFusion, for example)?
Closed: Fixed 4 years ago by major. Opened 4 years ago by ankursinha.

The title says it all. Do we or do we not support and list non free tools in NeuroFedora. For example, RPMFusion now contains the Mendeley desktop tool, and I've added it to our docs:

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/neurofedora/utilities/

This is mainly because I know lots of people use it. However, given that our mission is to make science and tools used in science Free/open source so that everyone can use them, I personally feel like we should take a slightly stricter stance and not list non-free software at all.

When it comes to Nvidia GPUs and related software, we may be able to make an exception, primarily because there is no alternative. For tools like Mendeley, though, there are plenty of alternatives.

What do you all think?

How about we decide on each one based on how good the foss alternative is have a vote for each whenever the time comes and go with whatever most are in favor of.

As discussed in the team meeting on 2019-09-26, we will only list non-FOSS if no FOSS alternatives are available.
