The ONLY open source surface based morphometry tool (I'm looking at you CIVET:) but it includes a myriad of other neuroimaging applications. FreeSurfer output is used by other tools such as Forward, Fijee, HNN, FieldTrip, etc.

Requires MATLAB for certain operations (LGI, FS-FAST, etc.) but not necessary for recon-all pipeline.

SUBJECTS_DIR and other environment variables used by other packages too. Assumes psub batch system used at the Martinos Center.

Still requires a separate .license file to be executed using the binaries from the Martinos Center..
