I went to #fedora looking for help in controlling a service from a user account (non-root). nirik quickly suggested a couple of options, one of which worked perfectly. Within minutes I was on my way and finishing my script. Thanks for the quick help!

It was a bit annoying to have to register with nickserv before entering the channel, but I understand that it is for bot/spam prevention purposes. It would be nice if there was a better solution.
