#695 Let's get Fedora higher on search results for "Linux"
Closed: moved 2 years ago by jflory7. Opened 6 years ago by mattdm.

Right now when I search for "linux" (in a fresh private window so no account history influencing the results), Fedora is the 15th result overall and the 3rd Linux distribution. I'd like to see us at least on the first page of results. What can we do to improve this?

Would it be helpful to find out if we can get some consulting/advice from SEO folks at RH?

Also we can increase update interval.
For example https://getfedora.org rarely updated. If the page's content updated regularly, it's ranking improved.
I suggest to include/add one or two Fedora related news, latest posts from FedoraPlanet, Fedora magazine, community blog, latest tweet and etc. in the main page.
Or add some statistics about the FedoraProject.

Adding mentioned sections to the website, keeps website fresh and also doesn't need someone to manually update the website.

+1 for including some kind of news feeds, Fedora Magazine is probably a better choice than Fedora Planet and other resources.

Or add some statistics about the FedoraProject.

Something like https://twitter.com/mattdm/status/890644535637712897 would be nice.

I don't think those statistics are likely to raise the search ranking though.

@duffy and @robyduck worked together to initially design the getfedora.org site as a sort of "brochure". I'm not sure how frequently-changing updates would fit into the design.

At the time, we had expected Fedora Hubs to provide that for fedoraproject.org, and having that redirect to getfedora.org was meant to be temporary. Ideally, really, we would focus on optimization of that site, but as I understand it, it's going to be a while before Hubs is really ready to provide that.

How powerful is collective link building on blogs and such? I just linked three references to Fedora on my blog and family website; I presume in and of themselves they won't impact that much, but would such a process make a difference if done on a larger scale?

No, getfedora.org is not the place where we want to make link exchanges.
Also, @mattdm is right, getfedora.org is not a replacement of fedoraproject.org, we did that with a specific target. It's a brochure website and not a Fedora news website.
We can try to optimize SEO a bit, but not with artificial content which has nothing to do with the main purpose of getfedora.org.
Not sure what @duffy wants to add here.

Mo, what do you think it would take to get a "minimum viable product" version of Hubs up and running at fedoraproject.org?

I see. As a general rule, when writing about Fedora, should we link to https://fedoraproject.org/ instead?

@mattdm we need more people.

Well, everyone and everything needs more people, so just saying that doesn't get us anywhere. I know it's a big project with a lot of ambition (I know for sure because a lot of it came from my ambitious ideas!) but is there a way we could break off a smaller chunk to serve as a dynamic front page, and then grow from there?

If we can't get an MVP of hubs up, can we look to create a non-brochure landing page that will hopefully rank higher?

And what do you want to target with that page? A remake of fedoraproject.org??

This issue still seems relevant, so I moved it to fedora-web/websites#214.
