#631 landing page for fedora container image
Opened 7 years ago by dustymabe. Modified 2 years ago

We used to have a page that explained what to do with our base container image when you download it: docker load etc..

It would be nice to have a page like that again. this page can also serve to explain the differences in different base container image offerings that we may have in the future.

Is this a page like https://alt.fedoraproject.org/cloud/ (say, https://alt.fedoraproject.org/containers/), or would it be better for Fedora Docs (in the new "short howto docs" format)?

Yeah, should be something like that, container or docker is fine. I'm just not sure under which hat this should go. Do you want to have its own logo and space? If yes, should that be called container (as there are more images in the future) or docker?

I think there's a good possibility of having other container types in the future, so keeping it generic is good. We could possibly also consider "oci", for "open container initiative", which is the nascent standard for container distribution, but I think for most people that's a little too obscure.

how many container types would we have? i think the first step would be another section on cloud.fpo rather than another page under it. if there's enough content break it out into a separate page but i dont understand the number of images you're thinking this will have?

This is what I see from the old page:
https://web-beta.archive.org/web/20160422145659/https://getfedora.org/cloud/download/docker.html

I don't see why a single image and some instructions needs its very own page?

It's not really a good match for cloud, since containers aren't cloud-specific; both things might imply scale-out computing but that's about it. C.f. LinuxCon splitting into LinuxCon, CloudOpen, and ContainerCon.

I think it's getting its own page basically for lack of other things like it. I'm very open to better ideas.

OHHH I get it, sorry, I conflated that it used to be on the cloud page - yeh if it is its own thing alt.fpo/containers makes sense. Sory for the confusion.
