#572 cloud/atomic: Installer ISO should be more prominent
Closed: Won't fix / Can't fix 5 years ago Opened 8 years ago by walters.

In https://getfedora.org/en/cloud/download/atomic.html the installer ISO is off to the side.

We should put it inline with the rest of the content; it works similarly to other installation media.

As I recall, that was because the installer version doesn't get the same automated testing. There's actually supposed to be some text there saying so (and the lack thereof is probably my fault.) However, Adam Williamson just posted to the cloud list about actually doing automated testing of that using OpenQA, so that might soon be a non-issue.

So - should we be tracking this over in Cloud to ensure there's reasonable testing of the ISO, and then come back with a patch?

That seems like the right plan, yeah.

This just in - apparently we're not updating for the new ISOs yet either.

So what should be the plan for this? I feel no image on the right is just ''off to the side'', that's the wrong interpretation and wouldn't make sense to any image (also WS and Server have images there).

The images on the right are important as well, but let me unproperly call them 'alternative images', means they are not advertised by the WG as main images (as base and atomic for example) but we still want them visible on the main download page. Otherwise the right columns could also be dropped completely.

I'm not sure what you mean here, exactly.

The plan should be:

  • Leave as-is briefly.
  • Ensure we're testing the ISO image
  • Move the ISO / bare metal image to the main list so it's at parity with the other image formats.

We totally want the bare metal as a "main" image.

Some info: It looks like we are producing the ISO image, but it is not receiving much of any testing.

A simple patch to update the link to point to the two-week artifact is attached. But we don't necessarily want to apply it yet until we come to an agreement about what to do.

Can we close this? The ISO points to the two-week artifact, and we have Atomic as main cloud edition now.

I don't think so - the page still seems cloud focused. "Bare Metal" should get at least 30% of the space as the cloud variants. Look at e.g. https://coreos.com/os/docs/latest/ for example.

There's some bits of this that really flow into documentation - like how to do PXE. One problem here of course is that the docs still talk about a single "Fedora", in e.g. https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/25/html/Installation_Guide/index.html But that's something we can figure out too.

But basically the website I think should have the key words of "ISO" and "PXE" at least.

https://getfedora.org/en_GB/atomic/download/ now mention AH ISO inline along with other Cloud images. ISO link will also get automatically updated with new twoweek release.

This ticket should be closed since we now have Fedora CoreOS and Fedora Silverblue which would either fit into the Desktop and Server categories OR we make the current third button on the main page which says "Atomic" a button that says something else instead.

Both CoreOS and Silverblue feature rpm-ostree so maybe the third category could be "Containers" and we link to the 3 different categories in there - server, desktop, container tooling for which we have 3 subdomains now (coreos.fedoraproject.org, silverblue.fedoraproject.org, containers.fedoraproject.org) - all 3 a work in progress.

Maybe open a new ticket for that discussion?
