#555 getfedora.org index redesign
Closed: Fixed None Opened 8 years ago by robyduck.

@FLOCK the design team came up with an improved version of our main getfedora.org page. Actually we still have the messages we wanted to display for fedora.next, but now we should improve that page and make things nicer, because users are used to see 3 Fedora editions and we can focus on something else.

We have a mockup for it, in [https://github.com/fedoradesign/nextweb-assets/blob/master/Mockups/Brochure%20Site/getfedoradotorg_final.svg SVG] and [https://github.com/fedoradesign/nextweb-assets/blob/master/Mockups/Brochure%20Site/getfedoradotorg_final.png PNG] format. The page has a slightly different structure, so we have to rewrite also the mobile stuff, but all in all it should not be too much work.

Let's try to get this in for F23 final release. Any ideas or help with this task?

Can we have an update for this? We need to have the main index ready ASAP, because we have to give L10n teams enough time to translate it. Can you at least file your first patches?
Thank you.

The index is more or less done, but still needs some tweaks, for example:
Height on top can probably be more
Edition backgrounds have white lines inside
The grey pattern is not visible, so we should drop the ''cover'' instruction or make a new png for it
The

lines are not so nice, and they are also difficult to set for all devices and resolutions. Drop them? Substitute them with other stuff?
* Titles for magazine, askfpo etc are thin (also the text), we could probably drop this class for the title (but then we are not consistent with the rest...)

The websites are now all in staging and running, you can see them there.

I don't know if I should post this here or anywhere else. Reviewing changes for translation of getfedora.org, I've found in the main page:
- no link to Fedora Magazine in the text (the image has it, though)
- "or '''askyour''' own question" in Get Help
- no link to Release Notes.

Thank you lonemadmax, fixed.

I like the design, and I think it looks much better than our current layout.
However, I'd like to propose a change to the primary tagline of "Fedora is now more focused"

I've discussed this on IRC with robyduck, and I am compelled to rewrite it because it infers that Fedora was not focused before. We've also split into different products a while back, so I don't feel like this tagline applies anymore.

The tagline that I am proposing is "one distribution for the workstation, server, and cloud"

I think we should change this in this redesign, otherwise we may never get to it because translations can take a while.

Also, perhaps figuring something out with the stripes at the bottom would make the page look even better. It is a bit difficult to understand what the 3-quarters-of-the-way lines mean at first glance, and it first seems like it is something broken. Maybe extending it all the way would make it look better? Perhaps it looks fine the way it is, and I am just too tired :)

Yes, the

is not nice, I just pointed that out in comment #6, there are also other tweaks to do.

For the tagline, let's see what design/marketing says to that. Personally I feel that with your proposed tagline we intend one image/download for all editions and that's not.

I don't think that's what the tagline would imply. It implies that Fedora is a distribution suitable for all your needs, however, it does not imply that it is in one image.

Replying to [comment:9 cydrobolt]:

Let's take this to the Fedora Marketing list, since it seems more of a marketing thing than a web issue per-se (except for the implementation, of course!)

I was talking to Máirín the other day, and she mentioned that she'd like to avoid the word "distribution", which is Linux-specific jargon. Possibly "One OS for the workstation, server, and cloud"? But, also, I want to position these as for use cases, not deployment environments. One OS for developer desktops, for easy server deployment and management, and for cloud computing... Anyway, let's take this to the marketing list. :)

All some pretty great ideas! I think "One OS for workstation, server, and cloud" could be interesting. I agree that we may want to focus on use cases rather than use environments, but we may be better off explaining those in the subtext rather than making the tagline more expansive.

Anyhow, I will send an email to the marketing list.

I would add a bit hover somewhere, it would be nice to 'liven up' a bit getfedora.org website
and also Ask Fedora icon is too small in responsive

F23 has been released, the new index is live.
