#12 RFE: Landing Pages for Secondary Architectures on getfedora.org
Closed: Fixed 7 years ago Opened 7 years ago by decause.

As described above, we'd like to add a landing page specifically for secondary arches. They are released on a slightly different timeline than the editions, and could use their own namespace. We'd be working with @pbrobinson to help flesh out the details.

So for F-24 GA we're planning on releasing at least aarch64/Power64 (both ppc64/ppc64le) same day as GA (normally announce just after Primary) with s390x being on the same day, maybe slightly behind. Happy to have them all on a single page, and if a arch is slightly delayed either have place holders and update the final links as necessary.

The deliverables per arch are:
aarch64: Server/Docker/Cloud Images (base images, no vagrant), disk images
Power64 (ppc64 and ppc64le): Server/Docker/Cloud Images (base images, no vagrant)
s390x: Server

Let me know what else you need from me

Ok, so this seems to be a necessary task, as we have almost all images on the websites. Alos, we had secondary arches on fedoraproject.org, but decided to give priority to primary images.

It's a good moment to start with secondary images, but they won't go under getfedora.org, because this page is for our main editions. The most logical solutions would be an own website for secondary arches, styled more or less like ARM images. I think there is not much to say about secondary arches, and we would be able to manage slight delays of those images easily.

Not sure what a good subdomain could be, https://secondary.fedoraproject.org doesn't sound really nice. We also need to go to Design and work for a logo and some other graphical stuff.

Finally, time and deadlines. I'm not sure we can make this website live for F24 GA; it's not too much work, but we have some tasks on spins.fpo and other websites for final release. We can give it a try and see if we can get it in in time, helping hand are welcome.

@pbrobinson: Cloud images are only base images? no vagrant, no atomic? And only server and docker, right? No desktop images (spins,workstation,...). Just to define this clearly.
Thanks.

Why not getfedora.org/altarches or altarches.getfedora.org? @mattdm mentioned he had no issues to make secondaries more easy to find from there when I discussed it with him.

Remi said he had some resources that he could get to assist with this.

For F-24 there is no atomic and no vagrant. No workstation/spins images that are release blocker we might end up with some for aarch64 for SBCs but they'll likely be test images (will know that in the next couple of days though) but the Server/Cloud/Docker is the key priority here.

Ok fine.
For the place, we don't even have getfedora.org/spins or getfedora.org/arm, and I feel https://altarches.fedoraproject.org could be a good option and gives us the ability to manage them differently (release time meaning) if needed.

The plan would be to rewrite alt.fpo and to put them there, Mairin did a mockup of how it will look like. Thoughts?

I'm less confident to get the website done within F24 GA...

The plan would be to rewrite alt.fpo and to put them there,

What exactly do you mean by this?

We'd like to write a website for https://alt.fedoraproject.org and include all the stuff we actually have there in a website (secondary arches, torrent link, archive). The subdomain would also be much better than altarches.fpo.

That has completely missed the point of what we wanted to achieve here. The WHOLE_POINT of the request is similarity NOT go go and hide it in the weeds with a whole bunch of other unrelated stuff!

So we're trying not to have a new subdomain for every little thing - and from the context of working on secondary arches i know it seems like just one more website, but we're getting a crazy number of requests for this sort of thing and it's making it harder for anybody to locate any of the proliferating new subdomains, because each new subdomain becomes just another list item in the common footer and the more items in the footer the less likely anybody reads or visits them. So by including it on alt.fpo we're actually trying to get this content better visibility.

If you want just one page with only the secondary arch stuff, what I propose is that we put it on the front page of alt.fpo as already proposed, and also have a alt.fpo/altarches and that could be a filter on the page that only shows altarches stuff. Does this seem reasonable?

We have a very early mockup running in staging actually: https://alt.stg.fedoraproject.org/

Please consider:
Links are all wrong, just placeholders
Layout of the mainpage should look like this
Speaking with mizmo, we probably want to go for a subpage for every major alternative download 'group'. This way we will have more space to write specific informations, i.e. for secondary arches.
The website is ready to be translated, source files are locked for now. I'll open them once we have a clear idea and some final strings.

First a minor point: MIPs isn't currently a secondary arch so shouldn't be on the list. We (rel-eng) don't deal with it at all, it's not signed with Fedora keys, mirrored on the Fedora space etc.

So on the Alt Arch stuff, a single link isn't really going to work well because it doesn't just go to a single page with a bunch of images, it's directory structure is basically identical to that of primary, with content spread all over the place.

The whole point of this request is so users don't have to dig through a bunch of directories to find installers/docker/cloud images that they're looking for.

That's what we want to solve with a specific page for secondary arches. Every architecture will have its own section where people can click to download the image they are looking for. Not a directory tree (like the actual alt.fpo page), but direct links to the image. No matter where they are.

You said there are 3 kind of images for every architecture, so these are not too much.

If this website is ready, can we translate it ?

No not yet. Once the website is ready I'll open the source document on Zanata for translating. Actually you should see it locked.

@pbrobinson: I can see many more images of secondary arches

Also, there are ppc64 and ppc64le IIRC. We would need some help with them, text, info etc...

Sure, give me an explicit list of things you need text for and I or someone can help

In my imagination we should have 3 (or 4) subpages for secondary, one for each architecture.
Are ppc64 and ppc64le to treat as different architectures? If yes, then we will have 4 subpages.

On top a description of what this architecture is for, just a few lines. Then I would follow with sections for Cloud, Docker and Server. As far as I understand you don't want to have Cloud netinstall images or Everything/ advertised. This will ake it much easier. Finally I'd add a verify page for all the images we host on alt.fpo.

I really don't know anything about secondary, so if there are characteristics or special featues we should show, can you provide them? Mail, ticket, text file, you can choose whatever you want, and I'll try to setup something we can hopefully publish soon.

Thanks for the help.

No, one labeled Power64

Correct, from this perspective it's basically the same as for primary and hence the text/content for Server/Cloud/Docker is basically the same as it is for primary as they are feature parity.

There's no real difference except it's a different architecture so there's nothing specific we want to highlight, the lack of difference is the "feature" so to speak. Let me know if there's any specific wording you need clarified regarding architectures let me know

Should the AArch64 images also be placed at arm.fpo?

And here's a list of todos:

  • need to rename PowerPC => Power64
  • Peter, I need some very short blurbs for each arch from you (there's filler text in mockup right now)
  • can you double-check the resources we're pointing people to for support are correct? all can be see on this one:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/fedoradesign/fedora-spins/master/alt-downloads/alt-mockup_front-page_secondaryarch-all.png

Nice attempt, but AFAIK there is no workstation image for secondary arches. The images are for Server, Cloud and Docker. Also, i.e. for Server there is more than one image. I can see a DVD and a netinstall image. So the question to Peter is: do you want to have them both on the website? If yes, we need to make another layout, if not the actual mockup could fit.

Thank you Mairin for your work.

if we need DVD + netinstall images, it would just take a minor modification to the mockup.

workstation - my bad, i knew there were three versions, my brain filled in workstation instead of docker.

when we figured out if it's both dvd+netinstall or not, i'll update the mockup to account for allt he mistakes i made!

As we have a week more until F25 GA release, I would like to try to get alt.fpo finally into production. We will go for this mockup:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/fedoradesign/fedora-spins/master/alt-downloads/alt-mockup_front-page_secondaryarch-all.png

Need some description for each alternate architecture and other informations you want to have on this page, which will be a dedicated subpage. This is urgent if we want to make it for F25 GA, minor tweaks or smaller changes can be done also later. The idea is to have it running and eventually make enhancements after the release.

Hi, Peter ask me to comment, so here are few notes
- the section should be called Alternative Architectures, "secondary" is an outdated term
- only the Server variant is produced for alt arches, with Cloud and Docker images on aarch64 and ppc64/ppc64le
- the PowerPC section should be probably renamed to Power (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Architecture) and include links to both ppc64 and ppc64le isos and images
- the per arch blurbs could be like
- for Power - If you want to install Fedora on IBM Power systems or on OpenPOWER systems, then you want this.
- for s390x - If you want to install Fedora on IBM z Systems, ...

Thank you, do you have an idea also for the aarch64 blurb?

Thank you, do you have an idea also for the aarch64 blurb?

I've asked Paul Whalen to help here. IMHO it could be "aarch64 SBSA-compliant server or selected embedded device", but will leave it on the aarch64 guys.

Ok, I added a blurb in the meanwhile, but I have some other questions. There are not only Cloud images (ISO), but also qcow2 and compressed raw images. For all arches I can see also an Everything image. Do you want to have them? Or are they less important for now?

Please checkout the staging website and see if we are going to the right direction. Image links are still placeholders, don't consider them for now.

For AArch64
"For use with AArch64 'Server Base System Architecture' (SBSA) compliant systems or Single Board Computers"

So https://alt.fedoraproject.org is live now, we will do some tweaks in the next days/weeks, for any issues please file a new ticket.
