#1078 Copyright Year on Website Pages!
Closed: complete a year ago by thunderbirdtr. Opened 3 years ago by ard1t.

After discussing with folks from RH Legal team a few weeks ago, about the use of copyright notice in source code, they pointed me to https://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/blog/copyright-notices-in-open-source-software-projects/ (and to internal RH doc), and how the copyright notice tend to be misused, and there is others way to assert copyright nowadays (and methods who are less onerous to maintain).

I will send them a message to see if there is maybe a easier way for the websites, or what they recommend.

Hi, Red Hat Legal person here. So a couple of things. One, many many years ago I proposed that Fedora cease using "Red Hat, Inc. and others" in its website copyright notice; I'm pretty sure I submitted a ticket on that issue. This practice was famously criticized by Bradley Kuhn in a blog post. I don't know what I suggested in 2011 but 'Copyright Fedora Project Contributors' or the like would be a possibility. There's no point in giving Red Hat special status and no point in lumping everyone else as an "other" (which now unfortunately makes me think of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hanging_Stranger).

The other thing, and I guess what ard1t was focused on in submitting this ticket, is that you don't need to keep track of years in a website footer copyright notice for the reasons given by Steve Winslow in the Linux Foundation article misc linked to.

It is still somewhat useful to have something that looks like a copyright notice at all, for the reason that people expect it to be there. So I'd change it to "Copyright Fedora Project Contributors" or something along those lines.

Thank you @richardfontana. I'd definitely prefer "Fedora Project Contributors" for exactly those reasons.

Hello! Can i be assigned to this?

The updated footer text should be:

Copyright © Copyright Fedora Project Contributors. Licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 except where noted.

Is it done ? Or can I be assigned to this and do the work ?

I think this issue is solved. Please correct me since 'getfedora.org' is now 'fedoraproject.org'

Why this issue still open ?
