#75 Update community image on start.fedoraproject.org
Closed: stale 3 years ago by jflory7. Opened 5 years ago by jflory7.

Summary

Update the Fedora community image on start.fedoraproject.org

Background

There is an image of the Fedora community towards the bottom of start.fp.o. The start page is the default home page of Firefox and Chromium on Fedora installs. It's one of the first things a user will see when they open the browser of a new Fedora installation (or old, if they never change it).

contribute-fedora-join-us.png

It's important to be representative and for people to see people that look like them. It would be a nice idea for the D&I Team to select and highlight some images of the Fedora community to display there.

Details

We will need to coordinate with the Fedora Websites team (like @robyduck). It would be ideal if we could rotate between 2-4 different images, preferably showing Fedora community members from different parts of the world.

If it is not feasible to make the page rotate images, then we can work on creating a new photo. Flock 2018 is potentially a good opportunity to update this image with a group photo (since we already have plans to collect a new group photo for Flock anyways, in #69).

The image can be found below and can be updated with a simple pull request:

https://pagure.io/fedora-websites/blob/master/f/start.fedoraproject.org/static/images/community.png

Outcome

Better representation of the Fedora community on start.fp.o and more likely that a visitor will be able to identify with the community, and perhaps be motivated to get involved

Anyone wants to pick this up. @dyaffe are you interested to pick this up :)

I’m interested in helping out! There should be Some contributors and Fedora people at Red Hat Summit. Maybe we can get a group photo done then. However, my gimp skills are nonexistent...

@dyaffe Hey that's a really nice idea and appt location to take the picture :)

We should post something to Fedora Magazine and Fedora Planet, too.

@dyaffe nice idea, if you want to work on a draft and share it for review, That will be great. Thanks.

For Fedora Appreciation Week 2018, we asked the community to share their favorite photos with us. They might be useful for this ticket. See the photos here.

@dyaffe do you have any new images?

I think each team member can suggest upto 2 images before a deadline, say May 30 and then we can vote on which one is the best. What do you think? @jonatoni @amsharma @jflory7

@bee2502 - @dyaffe must be busy in summit right now and I hope he will get a click for us from there.
Also, if we can extend the deadline after the Flock and FWD, we will have some nice images collected.

WDYT?

Great to know.

Sure, we can wait till after FLOCK.

I feel waiting till after FWD might be too late and FWD's are regional events - so it's better if the start image we have is representative of our global community. We can definitely add FWD pics in the image repo though.

Let's visit this in August/September then? I am blocking it for now.

+1 yeah, thanks.

I have been busy at Summit today. I will be working the Fedora booth tomorrow. I will see what I can do to get a picture!

A social media hash tag can be created for FLOCK participants to submit photos for use. The hash tag should be advertised at the event and in welcome packets possibly. Then you just need to check instagram, facebook and twitter and possibly make a photo collage or whatever else. This way its easy to gather photos that you know people are ok with you using.

@meskarune I love this idea because it does allow for an easier way to gather consent. We could always ask for permission quickly on social media as a reply to a Tweet or Instagram photo if we can use it on a Fedora website.

However, I will not have bandwidth to lead on this since I am already spread thin for Flock. It would be great if we could find someone to take lead on gathering photos of community members to use on places like our websites. That way, it would be easy for someone like @ryanlerch or @codeblock to pull from an archive of existing pictures too when using them on other Fedora websites like start.fp.o.

Asking flickr, 500px, and other apps users to label their pics with "Fedora" and assigning a CC licence after each event would help us a lot.

Just my 2c.

I thought we already have a FLOCK hashtag every year, dont we? This makes me reevaluate the hashtags I have used for my FLOCK pics

The hashtag could be an existing hashtag. Could you add context for why you are re-evaluating what hashtags you used before?

AFAIK the hashtag we have used is #FlockToFedora

I just review pics uploaded to twitter with that hashtag 'till 2016 and couldn't find any useful.

I got more look finding pics at flickr https://www.flickr.com/search/?text=flocktofedora , so we would only need to find the best pics and contact the contributors on them and ask for permission to use.

I meant re-evaluating personally - I might have used a different one than suggested.

I'm thinking on having a "portfolio review" with all the pictures taking by the contributors and somehow have a cleaned gallery of flock, and hopefully, an organized set of graphical resources for further marketing purposes, but I'm sure that should be into a different ticket.

I have some pictures that could work, however, I would be happy on just cleaning any that the team decides to use to update this request and move forward.

@codeblock @riecatnor @bcotton I think understanding where we can go to get this image updated would help us unblock this ticket. This image is what shows up on the browser default home page of every Firefox install in Fedora… for however many Fedora installs there are out there. :)

I saw design#672 pop up with the Design Team on modernizing the static site. I suggested this ticket as something to keep in scope for reworking the site.

@riecatnor Do you think this ticket is in scope for receiving design support during Outreachy 2020? It would be nice to refresh start.fedoraproject.org with something that represents more folks in the Fedora Community. :grinning:

This ticket is two years old, and hasn't reached a clear consensus. It was meant to be a good first issue, but I think it is best to close this as stale for now. If there is an interest to complete the work, we can always open a new ticket.
