The default emoji set used on Pagure is not inclusive. We can better represent the spectrum of folks in the Fedora Community through emoji, a tool we use to express ourselves.
Emojis are fixed to one skin tone (light skin tone). Emoji equivalents of man/woman binary emojis for gender-neutral or genderqueer are missing in the emoji set implemented by Pagure.
The message this implies is unclear! Do all Fedora contributors have light skin tones? Are all Fedora contributors strictly either a man or a woman? Anyone who participates in our community would immediately know this is not true.
So, the focus is not to have a chorus of agreement on the issue (which I take the assumption we do), but on how we address it. Let's use this ticket to brainstorm how we can work with the Fedora Community and Fedora Infrastructure to raise this concern as a priority.
I see two moving parts: picking an emoji set and adding support for it into Pagure.io.
For an emoji set, I propose this team decides on one that feels representative of the Fedora Community. Or at least as much as possible—I am not an emoji expert! There is a research component to this ticket to explore what emoji sets exist out there. One criteria for the search is that it must be Open Source.
My bias: I am a fan of Twemoji, Twitter's Open Source emoji set. Twitter has actively maintained this emoji set since 2014 and as a Twitter and Discourse user of Twemoji, I find their emoji set to be inclusive. But there are more and it might be worth comparing to one or two other Open Source emoji sets.
For adding support into Pagure, this is where we should make a communication plan to the Fedora Infrastructure team. We can follow up with a Pagure Request for Enhancement (R.F.E.) ticket when we are ready to bring this forward. It could be a project idea for a mentored project as well, if combined with another work component.
Since Pagure is a tool heavily used in the Fedora Community, the emoji set we use to express ourselves with will better represent who we are as a community.
I love the idea of using Twemoji in our Pagure platform it is rich and open source so +1 on that.
+1 for Twemoji
+0
+1 for Twemoji!
Discussed in 2022-04-25 team meeting.
We agreed we still would like to see this changed. Going forward, we need to identify the best way to bring this to the attention of the Pagure folks.

Looking back on this, while the intent is in the right place, Pagure development is challenged for a few reasons. Since we are considering a move to GitLab in #241, I am tempted to close this issue as not possible and push more on the GitLab migration instead.
not possible
About three weeks have passed since the last comment. I am going to close this issue out from our backlog, and we can enjoy the wider range of options for emojis that already exist in GitLab.
