#129 Idea for Fedora D&I related events.
Closed: complete 3 years ago by jflory7. Opened 3 years ago by nasirhm.

As Fedora D&I holds Fedora Womens Day, We at JOIN SiG are trying to help newcomers become contributors for Fedora Project and We keep track of them in Welcome-to-Fedora repo to help them if they need any. for example: to attain CLA+1, We provide temporary membership into the FAS join group.

I would like to suggest adding a Workshop for Newcomers to Fedora in D&I related events, where Internet Connectivity & Devices that can be used are Available.

Welcome to Fedora Workshop is where the speaker can guide new comers to make their own FAS Ids and then pagure and then Opening a ticket for themselves in Welcome To Fedora to keep track of their Progress time to time and to guide them if they get stuck at a Point.

What do you guys think ?

Hey @nasirhm! I do not understand the idea. It is cool that the Join SIG has the workshop and Welcome To Fedora repo. What do you suggest to the Fedora D&I Team do?

I agree with @jflory7's queries. I was wondering the same.

I would like to suggest to adding it into the Event Ideas Page for Fedora Women's Day.

We can add the link to resource pack. It is upto the organizers to use it or not depending on the event audience. Thanks,

Thank you =)

Would love to add it there @jonatoni =)

@nasirhm This is a great idea! Is this added or do you need any support from us? Once it's done, we can close the ticket.

@bee2502 I will create a draft on it and link here for the feedback.

Our ticket activity has taken off the past few weeks, so there is a lot going on. I also know @nasirhm is juggling a lot of different tasks, both in the D&I Team but also in CommOps, Mindshare, Join SIG, and more.

I propose that instead of adding this as a new event to our docs, we collaborate with the Join SIG on newcomer workshops. The D&I Team could advise the Join SIG team on how to be more inclusive for organizing virtual events. In some cases, maybe we could even use some of the D&I budget to fund small things like a headset or short-term Internet connectivity for a Join SIG event organizer.

I think doing it this way accomplishes the following:

  1. Leave the newcomer on-boarding to the pros: The Join SIG does a great job of bringing in newcomers and there is a lot of fresh energy there. It is more likely that others would discover the workshop in the Join SIG, and maybe decide to lead their own.
  2. D&I-as-a-Service: I think this helps us move the team towards a "consultation" role instead of driving and leading new work. We can offer a "inclusivity perspective" on events and community organizing.

Overall, I am worried about capacity not just to write this, but also to maintain it. I think it will make a better home in the Fedora Join SIG team. What do you think @nasirhm @bee2502?

Our ticket activity has taken off the past few weeks, so there is a lot going on. I also know @nasirhm is juggling a lot of different tasks, both in the D&I Team but also in CommOps, Mindshare, Join SIG, and more.

It's great to see all the activity that's going on within Fedora D&I team. I'm trying to catch up with things where I left them off and get them done. Thank You :)

The Welcome-to-Fedora process is well documented in Fedora Join SiG docs. Creating a different doc in Fedora Join docs for the workshop would mostly be duplication of it. I was thinking of adding a line in the resource pack to link to the welcome doc and adding something in our Resource Pack docs like:

Did you find people interested in contributing to Fedora, Kindly help them to create a Welcome To Fedora ticket for themselves for Fedora Join SiG to keep track of their progress and help them become contributors.

and I would be more than happy to facilitate the organizers from the Fedora Join SiG's side.

A super +1 for it to point newcomers to Fedora Join SiG.

  1. D&I-as-a-Service: I think this helps us move the team towards a "consultation" role instead of driving and leading new work. We can offer a "inclusivity perspective" on events and community organizing.

Sounds like a great idea for D&I team and this will ensure we're working on Inclusiveness in different sectors in Fedora.

+1 to @nasirhm 's feedback.

I also like @jflory7 's idea of D&I-as-service. Should we open a new ticket to discuss more about this?

+1 to @nasirhm 's feedback.

Thank you @bee2502 ^^

I also like @jflory7 's idea of D&I-as-service. Should we open a new ticket to discuss more about this?

I believe this idea deserves to be discussed and it's better to create a new ticket as this one's about the Join SIG Welcome-to-Fedora addition in Resource Pack. Here's the new ticket for it: https://pagure.io/fedora-diversity/issue/152

@nasirhm opened PR #151 with an addition about the Fedora Join SIG "Welcome to Fedora" process. I think that addresses the original goal/need for this ticket. We did fork the "D&I-as-a-Service" discussion off into a new ticket, so we can continue that there.

Closing as complete. Thanks @nasirhm!
