#126 Idea: Create wallpaper/webpage with a theme that shows Fedora cares about diversity
Closed: duplicate 3 years ago by jflory7. Opened 4 years ago by till.

This could match the swag from #125 and would be nice to be used at events on demo systems. It would also be nice for Fedorator, if it is still a thing.

I like the intent behind this idea. However, I am mildly concerned it could be interpreted as tokenism. Fedora does care about D&I, but a wallpaper or webpage might not be the way to communicate that.

The motivation for our still-open ticket like #75 was to better showcase the diverse contributors in our community in Fedora's web presence. It would be nice to think about messaging in our web platforms to be more mindful of representation of our community. However, given that #75 was opened in July 2018 and has not progressed, I feel like web design tasks are not something our team is currently equipped to handle.

I requested that because https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing/Contributor_Recruitment states that recruiting new members for Diversity and Inclusion is a primary goal. For this people at Fedora booths should be supported. Since showing a demo system at conferences is a usual activity, it would be great to be able to do so while marketing for this goal.

…recruiting new members for Diversity and Inclusion is a primary goal.

What success criteria are we looking for with this goal? How do we know if we meet it? I'm not trying to bait you, but I think we have to frame this differently before figuring out how we meet this goal.

I appreciate the intent to create more visual representations of D&I in Fedora. But I'm not sure if a wallpaper or webpage is how we do that. I think we have to consider what the value of this work is and whether it helps us meet this goal. Only because we only have a very small, limited resource of time that we as volunteers can spend on this work, so it helps us when we know what the return on investment of our time on a task is.

I know it might seem like I am shooting down good ideas, but this is coming from my perspective of having seen the Fedora D&I Team do a lot of work over the years, and I have seen a lot of great ideas incomplete or unrealized, despite a large amount of volunteer time and effort going into those ideas.

From what I understood about the initiative is that if advocates ask for sponsorship of events, the event should target to get new people contact the join team with an interest to work in D&I.

From my experience with Fedora booths, the minimal setup contains usually a notebook that shows the recent Fedora live image or similar so attendees can try it out. To support those booths, a themed wallpaper seems like the simplest approach. Maybe a slide set with some D&I facts about Fedora would be nice, too.

Since in-person events are cancelled this year, it is probably not a priority anymore. However, if at some point in-person events become a possibility again, digital support media such as wallpapers or slides would be great.

I think this ticket is asking for multiple things (wallpapers, written resources, and slides). It is a lot for the team to take on right now, and I'm not sure we are well-positioned for new contributors who do not already have experience and knowledge about the Fedora Community.

I think we can track this work in tickets #54, #75, and #122 since they cover similar requests around what was asked for in this ticket. Closing as duplicate.
