Let's start gathering the ideas how and what D&I team plan to do this year in Flock, 2019. Some of existing thoughts are -
Please share more ideas which you think D&I team should be doing during this year's flock. We will decide within the team to pick the top 3 ideas. Thanks.

@jonatoni @bee2502 @jflory7 @pyadav @nikhilkathole Please come up with more suggestions for Flock, 2019 and I hope you all have registered for Flock by now :)
Apart from the mentioned ideas, I really like the proposals we submitted last year like
I feel that these sessions received a good response. We also have a lot of feedback for these so I think it would be best for us to focus on improving these sessions for the upcoming FLOCK and working on getting a bigger audience for them.
I like all the ideas @bee2502 you mentioned.
At the same time ( just to mention once again), we will stick to the top 3 ideas which team can manage to accommodate and can do their best :)
We need to have a deadline by when we would like to decide on top 3 picks - I want to purpose a random one and subject to discussion - 30th May, 2019?
I suggest one primary submission for the team to submit at Flock. We did great last year but I felt like we were somewhat over-extended during Flock 2018.
GSoC/ Outreachy Project Showcase
I think this is an excellent session but not sure if it makes sense for the D&I Team to lead this? We should coordinate with the Fedora Summer Coding admins to propose this session, I think. It's a great session but I think the D&I Team should focus on sessions specifically around our team or our goals.
Maybe I am not seeing this from your POV, so curious for your thoughts.

Unconscious bias and Imposter Syndrome workshop
I thought this worked well and had positive feedback. Instead of the same content, we could focus on it in a different way. I did a semester's worth of research into the history of STEM and imposter syndrome and have some ideas on how we could add in new content.
Candy swap (though this was mainly @jflory7, I feel like it is related to inclusion )
I have driven this for the last few years, but since I am reducing my time spent in Fedora, I think this is a good idea of an event to be "sponsored by" the Fedora D&I Team.
Since the Flock CFP is not yet open, +1 for 30 May as an internal deadline.

For Outreachy, since we are helping with organization, I thought D&I team could lead this. But if summer-coding admins want to go ahead, I don't have a problem. The important thing for me is that the session happens at FLOCK (and not just at this one) - so that community knows how these programs are bringing value.

@amsharma can you please elaborate on how implicit bias workshop and unconscious bias training will be different? and what does 'policing' mean for this workshop?
Also, the neurodiversity talk - I think it's related to unconscious bias so I want to know how it will be different.
Also, why can't we have votes from broader Fedora community.. it would be nice to get community's perspective too.
:-) Neurodiversity +1 candy swap +1
Cheers,

All of these topics are interrelated but the activities, definitions and examples differ from each other. We need to select and choose what we can accommodate and not rush through everything withing a given limited time to connect with audience on selected topics.
First the organizers of the topics need to know what they feel strong about presenting a topic. I am not sure how the Flock CFP and paper selection will be done but broader Fedora community part will be considered IMO during that time.
:-) Neurodiversity +1 candy swap +1 Cheers,
Thanks @Ibazan :)

Can you please elaborate a bit more for activities and examples for the new ideas i.e. neurodiversity, Workshop on Implicit Bias and Policing ?

@bee2502 Sure.
Neurodiversity is a framework that embraces the variety of brain makeups found in the human species. Advocates believe that, to some extent, everyone is differently abled (an expression favored by many neurodiverse people). Each person is unique, and each person is raised differently. Our ways of thinking result from both our inherent machinery (our brain) and the experiences that have programmed us. Our talk focus on this topic can be about knowing the signs, learning the actions and be a lifeline and break the stigma!
Also, Red Hat runs an Neurodiversity D&I Community which is very successful internal community and has a lot of helpful material, I am sure they will help in case we need it.
Implicit Bias and Policing - As we already spoke about Unconscious bias, I think it is helpful to tell the difference, Unconscious bias refers to a bias that we are unaware of, and which happens outside of our control. It is a bias that happens automatically and is triggered by our brain making quick judgments and assessments of people and situations, influenced by our background, cultural environment and personal experiences. Implicit bias refers to the same area, but questions the level to which these biases are unconscious especially as we are being made increasingly aware of them. Once we know that biases are not always explicit, we are responsible for them. We all need to recognize and acknowledge our biases and find ways to mitigate their impact on our behavior and decisions.
We can cover - Impact of implicit bias on behavior and actions, Methods and techniques for reducing implicit bias and Create a culture of equality.
I found this useful - https://trustandjustice.org/resources/intervention/implicit-bias , It has a lot of research papers links too.
And Policing is all about creating rules, laws etc. and a major cause of biased policing is likely the implicit biases. They are generally discussed together for better understanding of the topic
HTH, I can provide more examples and material if we decide to finalize this one. Thanks.
Created - https://pagure.io/flock/issue/115 for the D&I team hackfest.
We have candy swap and a half day team hackfest proposals for Flock, submitted. Do we want more proposals from the team? According to sheet ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BdKmNcHlGdsVvmC714K8GQPg4HqET09VrY6DMX--yP4/edit#gid=0 ) , we have few more topics which have good number of votes. If team thinks we have bandwidth, we can submit one more. Please comment and share your thoughts. Thanks.

Oops! I replied via email and didn't notice @amsharma's previous comments.
@amsharma We had a lot of positive feedback on the "speak another language" idea in #91, probably as an evening activity. I think we should propose that one. Does anyone else want to take lead on writing up the proposal for this one? The priority deadline is 1 June (i.e. about 24 hours from this comment).
I am +0 on the neurodiversity session because I believe we should empower the people in our community who have experience to participate in a panel format on this. Since people have different levels of familiarity with neurodiversity, I thought it makes sense to include those in our community with direct personal experience to participate in this panel/session. Personally, I do not have this direct personal experience and do not feel comfortable leading a session about neurodiversity.

Really want to do it but currently busy with stuff, I will see if I will get sometime to write it before the deadline.
I saw one related topic already in the submissions, I think @ankursinha did it.
Does anyone have time to help write the proposal in the Flock CFP tracker as an evening activity? We can offer guidance and support to anyone who wants to help as a co-organizer for this session.

Hi team -- I can help with this activity.
¡Gracias @lbazan! If you can have a draft over the weekend for #91, that would be super. Let us know how we can help.

@lbazan is looking for more co-organizers to help with his session! Drop a comment on #91 if you are interested.
We wanted to bring more structure and focus on the 1x1 coffee chats and come up with a plan for how we run these events. @recursedd will open a new ticket with ideas for this session and @tatica will follow-up with some of her ideas / comments.
A good topic for our next meeting is to look at flock#115 and come up with a loose agenda of how we want to run this event. I suggest filing a new ticket specifically for this session so we can work out the details outside of this tracker ticket for all of our Flock activities.
Discussed in 2019-06-24 meeting.
As discussed last week, @recursedd and @tatica collaborated on ticket #106 to collect ideas and plan the Coffee Chat event we proposed for Flock. Please take some time this week to review that ticket and add some feedback!
To help us get our thoughts and ideas organized, @amsharma is working on a draft agenda for our hackfest by Monday, 8 July. This will be a way for us to get our thoughts together, prioritize our most-important tasks, and figure out how we can best spend our time during our hackfest.
I suggest opening this as a new ticket since this one is our overall Flock planning ticket. :)
Thanks @recursedd @tatica and @amsharma for volunteering on this week's Flock tasks! :tada: :dancer:

hackfest planning - https://pagure.io/fedora-diversity/issue/109
Discussed in 2019-07-01 meeting.
We briefly reviewed Flock sessions. #109 (D&I Hackfest) has an open action item for first round of feedback due by Monday, 8 July. Whether you will be at Flock or not, your feedback on what topics we should cover and include are important! :raised_hands:
Otherwise, most discussion is taking place in the smaller sub-tickets. Please review #106 and #109 and share feedback in those tickets when possible.

Adding just for record, Some AI from Flock 2019 -
Thanks everyone who participated in the D&I planning for Flock last year! This was a team effort and would not have happened without everyone pulling together to make it possible.
I think @nikhilkathole's comment above is a good summary of our takeaways. We can open new tickets as needed to drive forward conversations that came from our sessions.
Closing as complete.
