#237 Create kanban project board for project planning

Summary

Create kanban project board on teams.fp.o to help with project planning

Background

Kanban is a project planning framework commonly used with agile development. It helps with the following areas:

  1. Visualize what tasks are planned for 1-2 weeks ahead
  2. Understand what tasks people have taken on already and what they are working on at a glance
  3. Avoid one person taking on too much work at one time

The project board will be based on our requirements list. I updated the requirements list on Friday based on what was completed by @shraddhaag and @alishapapun in the community bonding phase.

Ideally, once this is up and running, it will be the "dashboard" of our project and will be used every week during our Wednesday video calls.

Details

I create a kanban board on teams.fp.o. Currently, it's empty. Before our next video call, I want to populate and set it up to reflect current work. As we continue along, each team member will be responsible for updating their progress on the project board. We'll use it as a tool to guide our weekly video calls once it is created.

Outcome

  • More transparency for what interns (and mentors where applicable) are working on
  • Easier to plan what we are focusing on week-to-week

To guide project planning, we will use the three "phases" structured by Outreachy to track our progress and measure goals:

  • Phase 1 end: June 8, 2019
  • Phase 2 end: July 8, 2019
  • Phase 3 end: Aug. 18, 2019

Tentatively, all requirements, open issues, and bugs-to-be-discovered would fit somewhere in one of these three phases:

  • Phase 1: Misc. bug fixes and clean-up, smaller tasks
  • Phase 2: Deploying to staging and production
  • Phase 3: Feature adds and further improvements as time allows

I made some progress on setting this up. :raised_hands: Here's how it looks so far:

I'm going to send email invitations to mentors and interns. Keep an eye out for the email invitation. We can give a brief rundown of how to use it during our weekly call.

Wow! :100:

In our weekly check-in call today, we covered the project board and did a short intro of how it works. As of now, it's "live" and we will use this actively each week to guide development and help us prioritize our time. :watch:

@alishapapun @shraddhaag Next week when the next Outreachy phase begins, the other mentors and myself will have more guidance on major tasks for each of you to work on for the next few weeks based off of what is in the project board.
