Badge description
Badge for Akademy 2021

You visited Fedora KDE SIG at the Akademy 2021!

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
- You visited Fedora at the Akademy 2021!

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
- Visitors

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?

I'm personally leaning toward the second one (without the flare), but I'd like @carlschwan's opinion.

I also prefer the second one

@riecatnor could you please confirm the design then @computerkid and push to badge and give badge permission to @ngompa ?

Side note : We may need to push right away (For option number 2) we can always change design if it is needed.

Okay, after MANY errors(I appear to have not slept well last night, and also it's Friday), the badge is pushed and authorized.

I'll leave this open in case we want to change artwork

the second one is more good, the first comes with that radial gradient ...

Are there going to be additional badges for those that participate in virtual training and discussion sessions? Do you want badges like a trophy or medal-type fedora design badge? I am a newbie, so I would like to know before I start designing anything. Since the Conference of KDE Akcademy 2021 is global, it comprises artists, engineers, developers, software technicians, writers, and graphic designers.

Hi, even though this badge is pushed, I think there is scope for improvement. I'm tagging this with the Outreachy tag so that we can get some input in the upcoming Outreachy contribution period :)

Hello @smeragoel , please, I would like to be assigned this issue. Thank you!

Hello @smeragoel @riecatnor, I'd like to work on this issue. Thank you

HI @ganiyat & @ikumena hopefully you connected with @smeragoel or myself in the badges chat earlier this week, but in case not, please do submit art for this ticket! Thanks :)

Hi @shwetaeren & @ikumena thanks for working on this! A couple notes that apply to both designs:
- We should be using the Akademy or KDE logos- we don't want to redesign that in a Fedora style
- The main issue with the old design is the readability- we should try to find a better file for the Akademy logo and play with the colors/background in order to improve readability
Looking forward to seeing what you can do to improve that :)

Hey @riecatnor I have a doubt, I used the kde logo in my design, is it wrong or should I use the akademy 2022 banner or their mascots because akademy doesn't have its own logo.
Or should I just edit the previous badge for better readability?

@riecatnor Good afternoon, I played around with the colors as you suggested but I couldn't find the same Akademy logo the original designer used in better quality. Would it be okay to reach out to them for help? I did however get another KDE logo and made some drafts with that, I hope that's okay? I look forward to hearing what you think of them.

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel! I would also like to work on this issue!

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel I played around with a new kde logo and text, with the aim to increase readability, while keeping it simple yet eye-catching. I have used the best official logo I could find, since I could not find the same in a good quality for akademy. Please let me know how this looks?
Attaching the png file here for review. Meanwhile trying to find something which can make this badge work for the akademy logo!

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel
"Meanwhile trying to find something which can make this badge work for the akademy logo!" - do you have any suggestions/pointers for this? I had tried to, but am unable to find a file for akademy :/

Hi everyone! Some general feedback:

Do not modify the Akademy 2021 logo. Instead, try to experiment with the background colour/gradient to improve the readability of the logo. We shouldn't use the updated logo since this is specifically for the 2021 edition. As for the logo link, I think this should be helpful: https://akademy.kde.org/sites/akademy.kde.org/files/2020/akademy_logo_simple.png

Hi folks, there is badge art for this that needs to be improved, which you can find in this comment.

I think the main issue is that the Akademy logo is kind of pixelated.. for this design I would suggest looking for the source file for the Akademy logo so we can use that instead of the pixelated version.

We could also try different styling with the "2021", see these two options: 1, 2. But I don't think the current styling of the year is too far off.

Make sure you are adhering to the template and other style guidelines :)

@ngraham is there a source SVG for the Akademy logo available somewhere?

@riecatnor are we to leave the "2021" on the badge or change the date to 2021?

@ngraham is there a source SVG for the Akademy logo available somewhere?

Brobably but I don't know where it would live. @apol do you happen to know?

Heya designers! The design for this ticket just needs to be improved, which you can find in this comment. The precedent for event badges is the Event logo on top of a grey radial or linear gradient.

I think the main issue here that the Akademy logo is kind of pixelated.. there are some folks on the thread looking for the source file for the Akademy logo- let's see if we can get that from them.

Meanwhile, @chris and @duchessolive I noticed you both have a vector of the logo in your SVGs, I am wondering where you got it? Could you share the source for that please?

akademylogo.svg

@riecatnor here is my Vectorized logo i was able to trace it with Inkspace. If anyone will be needing help on how to trace designs from a png file, I am willing to assist you. i got the png file from a google search

@chris do you mind if i made use of your "Akademy" logo?, still trying to work my way around using Inkscape.

Your welcome. I am Ready to help where i can

Hey folks- tracing the logo is okay, but not ideal. I think we need the source file from the Akademy folks. I tried to dig into the KDE documentation, but I couldn't really find any art files.. Maybe @ngompa or @thunderbirdtr know where the design team for KDE works/communicates? We could ask for the logo in that space

@thunderbirdtr thanks, this is perfect!

Designers, please use the source file provided in the comment above

@duchessolive ahhh this is much nicer with the source file! This is very close. Some small feedback for you:
- I think I prefer the version with the radial gradient.. which one do you like more?
- I would lower the "Akademy" so that feels more centered in the badge design area
- I would suggest making the year bubble a bit smaller, and putting a white stroke on the letter to make those bolder and readable. I think the year might be slightly off center in the bubble as well, so just make sure that is right in the middle

@jhennifer
- The fedora logo has some usage rules when it comes to size and clear space. Right now, the logo is too small to be legible. We don't need the logo anyway, so you can remove it.
- Use comfortaa font for the text, it looks like you used some other font.
- I'd suggest going through the previous comments on this thread to avoid common mistakes

Looking forward the next version!
