#814 RH Summit Badge for 2021
Closed: pushed 2 months ago by jflory7. Opened 3 years ago by thunderbirdtr.

Badge description

Red Hat Summit 2021

You visited Fedora at the Red Hat Summit in 2021!

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
- You visited Fedora at the Red Hat Summit in 2021!

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
- Visitors

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?

Old one : https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/616

I think since this is just a straightforward update of the number on the existing one @nb or @computerkid should be able to put this into place. Since people are clamoring for it in the chat now.

Red Hat Summit has an updated logo since last year, probably want to use that?

Ah good point. Okay, this is in Design Team hands now :)

I cannot push until design team approves. I'll try to ping people.

Actually, I decided to go ahead and push it, and if design team wants changes, I can replace the art.

how are we planning to award badges?
I am on the booth duty, do I collect usernames?

@siddharthvipul1 check with @mattdm once, he collected a list of usernames yesterday for this as well.

czanik wants to be added to that list (from today)

@thunderbirdtr Great badge, thanks!

I'm not on the design team, but as long as this is still open, I've got a couple of suggestions. But these are all trivial. :)

  • It looks like it's slightly larger than other badges when viewed on badges.fedoraproject.org
  • I think the year would look better if centered on the triangle pointing down from the Red Hat Summit logo.
  • The year font might look better as Red Hat Display Black, too, since that's probably what the logo uses: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Red+Hat+Display

@bonnevil Great suggestions; thank you so much. I'm tagging this issue for Outreachy applicants so they can try out your suggestions and fix the sizing issues also. Thank you so much :)

Hi @riecatnor and @smeragoel I'll be taking up this issue! Started work on this :)

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel, I have worked on this issue. Attaching the designs I worked on
I have incorporated all the suggestions by @bonnevil and used the latest logo for Red Hat Summit, with the year centered on the triangle pointing down from it.
I went played around with font styles and have come up with two versions:

  1. Here the font for 2022 is extra bold
    issue-814-1.png
    issue-814-1.svg

  2. here the font for the year 2022 is heavy (bold), I went with this variation as I felt it matched nicely with the "Red Hat Summit" text inside the logo
    issue-814-2.png
    issue-814-2.svg

Please have a look and let me know the feedback/review on both of them  I will work on it further

Hi @zohamid! Thank you for your work on this. Here are some suggestions:

  • I think we need some more space between the year and the logo. Just a tiny bit, not too much.

  • Try reducing the size of the logo and increasing the size of the year. Again, just a little. I think the new logo is more bold and loud so we can experiment with the size a bit.

  • How about changing the colour of the year to the red in the logo? I think it could look nice!

  • I personally prefer the first version, but we could decide on that after we nail down the size, placement and colour of the two elements!

Looking forward to the next version!

Hello @quintessential! Here are a few suggestions:

  • The logo is a bit too large right now. It is too close to the edge of the background. Reducing the size a bit will add some breathing space!

  • The placement of the elements seems a bit off. I'm not sure if they are centred on the frame. Could you check that?

Thank you for your work!

Hi @smeragoel thank you so much for your suggestions!
I worked on the 4 points, attaching the work below:

issue-814-extra-bold.pngissue-814-heavybold.png

These are the two versions side by side (differing only in boldness style of the year font) with all four of your suggestions re-worked! once we finalize which version looks better, I will post the updated, single SVG for this issue to avoid confusion later on!

We're probably going to want a 2022 version anyway if Fedora is going to have a chat room presence or whatever at the virtual Red Hat Summit in May this year.

Hi @smeragoel and @riecatnor

Check this too.
Red_Hat.pngRed_Hat.svg

Year is off-center from the Summit logo (see the downward pointing triangle) and it looks like the Red Hat Summit logo is a lot smaller than the ones on the older badges with the old logo. I think the ones from @quintessential keep the new Red Hat Summit logo closer to the same size (and a more legible size) as the ones on the older Red Hat Summit badges without overfilling the badge.

This issue was originally about the Summit 2021 badge...but Summit 2022 starts on May 8 and we might also need a new badge for that, so these 2022 proposals are also of interest.

Hi @riecatnor How can this badge be claimed? in what session? :-)

Regards!

was wondering the same myself? did not find any Fedora chatroom to get it in

Hi @riecatnor and @smeragoel

I am Olive, an Outreachy applicant. I want to contribute to this issue

1.) Attending the Fedora Red Hat Summit of 2021 was the prerequisite for getting the badge. Thus, the activity that qualifies a person to get this badge is attendance.

2). Packagers, users, translators, veterans, and even sponsors are eligible for this badge once they visit the booth

3). For the artwork concept, there could be Mascot or the Fedora logo on the badge. However, the logo could be styled differently just for the badge or we can opt for one that syncs the two brands into the final work.

The other idea for this is to spotlight where the summit was happening through easily-identifiable landmarks.

Hiya folks- the design work needed here is to take the file from this comment and improve it based on the feedback in this later comment. In the previous versions of this badge, the year has been red, so I think trying two versions is a good idea (one with red and one with black for "2021"). Check out the previous badge designs to see what this should look like: 1. 2, 3

Thank you @riecatnor for the corrections, I have changed the font type to Red Hat Display, and I have also downloaded the exact design you pointed out, reduced the size, and also made 2021 the both red and black color

Hi @duchessolive thanks for continuing work here. Some notes for you:
- Make sure you upload both the PNGs and SVGs for any designs you work on :)
- The background is nice! Good job on that
- I think we want to go with the Red Hat Summit logo from this comment, but I think it might be squished. I would re-import the logo. The general size and placement is good
- I think the black text is working better than the red, what do you think? You could also try using the darker red in the Fedora Badges color palette?
Looking forward to your next draft!

Hi folks, thanks for the work here! Feedback below :100:

@duchessolive nice improvement, the re-imported logo looks correct. Notes for you on the latest upload:
- I am debating which looks better for the numbering, dark red or black? They both have nice qualities. I am curious, what do you think?
- The logo seems a bit off center. It looks closer to the left side.. you might have centered it on the page, but since the badge template is rounder on the right side, its good to take that into account and make adjustments based on how it looks

@orezi5 thanks for starting work here, here are some notes for you:
- I think I like the version with the black text the best, can you try a version using the Red Hat typeface?
- The logo seems a bit off center, it is too high.. try lowering that a bit and the year with it

Looking forward to the next drafts!

@riecatnor Thank you for the feedback. I have used the Red Hat typeface and I have lowered the logo and year. I like the version with the black text likewise. The black text gives the year a distinct view towards the usual Red Hat summit, since the year is dynamic and the Red Hat Summit is static so, the year should carry a distinct/changed view. The red text version just blends with the logo, making it look plain neutral.

Hi folks, feedback below :100:

@duchessolive The logo now looks centered! Notes for you:
- I like the dark red version as well, so you can move forward with that one
- The logo and the year are quite close, I would suggest moving the year down a little bit so there is some space between
- I think there is something off with your template still.. the drop shadow looks darker than the template files and other badges.. I would suggest starting with a new template file and importing the work that you've done into that. Make sure you don't make any changes to the template, only make additions to the grey badge design area in the middle

@orezi5 one note for you:
- I think you have a similar issue to duchessolive, there is something off with your template.. the drop shadow looks darker than the template files and other badges.. I would suggest starting with a new template file and importing the work that you've done into that. Make sure you don't make any changes to the template, only make additions to the grey badge design area in the middle

Looking forward to next drafts
