#628 Fesco badge needs to be adjusted
Opened 6 years ago by zbyszek. Modified 7 months ago

The "rubber stamp" / "last argument of the kings" / "you were a member of fesco" badge was added in https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/36. In https://pagure.io/fesco/issue/1914 FESCo approved the following:
- Change the text in the "fesco" badge to "Nunc, ut ad villam meam", and update the URL to to https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/nunc-ut-ad-villam-meam

I kindly request for those changes to be implemented.

Here the pink part is already a path. Not easy to edit ;(

@churchyard how important is changing the URL? That is not easily done, we would have to delete the old badge and make a new one and award it to everyone. It is not possible to change a URL for an existing badge. Changing the art is easy.

/cc @herrold

I think we have to take limited man power into account. My vote would be to keep the old URL if it is too much work to change. Most people don't look at the URL anyway.

@nb the requirement for changing the URL is not from me, I've already questioned the possibility in https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/36#comment-517636

I had not asked for a URL change and it was added after my comments

That said, in the .conf for:

https://badges.fedoraproject.org

the URL fix is as simple adding a single 302 line:

Redirect permanent \
/badge/the-last-argument-of-kings \
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/nunc-ut-ad-villam-meam

I used backslash continuation, but that all goes on one unbroken line, of course

OK, OK, it seems that it was me who added the URL to the list of things to be changed. I like to be thorough ;) I think we're in agreement that the old URL should stay unless it's easy to update.

Any chance this could be implemented? The issue to award the badge came up again after the last elections and I'm not happy to see the old offensive text.

Hi! The fedora-badges repo still has the old version, do you want me to import the new artwork or do you want to do it?

Design folks usually don't import artwork. I just did and pushed the changes. That should update the badge art automagically, right?

How about we keep all the rest unchanged. I quite like the name of the badge and with the revised Latin stamp, it kind of gets a pun. The offending part was mainly the Latin text on the stamp. King does not need to be interpreted as something imperial. Think King of the Hill for example.

It does update automatically :-) https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/the-last-argument-of-kings

That said the badge is still labeled "The last argument of kings", which is a literal translation of the latin, so I'd say the offensive reference is still there.

I can update the badge's name in the DB as soon as there's a green light for that.

The new image doesn't show for me. I get a broken link icon instead. However, going to the image directly, https://badges.fedoraproject.org/pngs/rubber-stamp.png, shows it. Albeit it seems to never load fully. I only get to see half of it or 3/4. Weird!

Yes, it's the translation of the Latin, but with the new Latin text on the rubber stamp, I think it's quite funny. From the FESCo ticket:

The version of the badge containing the verbiage:

Ultima Ratio Regum

should have that content removed, and something more along the line of

Cincinnatus, such as:

I return to my farm

I think the new badge art meets that bar.

Yeah, let's wait for others to chime in.

Same here.

We discussed this above, and the conclusion was to keep the badge url changed. (See https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/628#comment-523616). But I agree that we should change the text too, while keeping the url.

OK I have updated the text but kept the ID/URL:
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/the-last-argument-of-kings
I still find it a bit weird that the URL does not match the badge, but maybe it's me :-)

I suppose @abompard's actions have resolved the issue. Or it was some caching / proxy thingy. The badge art now shows properly.

@ekidney, thanks for re-uploading. But that wasn't really necessary.

Read it as a continuation and it kinda makes sense in a funny, poetic way:

The Last Argument of Kings
(long, poetic argument)
Now, I return to my farm
