#750 New artwork for the Fedora Podcast
Closed: Fixed 2 years ago by computerkid. Opened 2 years ago by computerkid.

Could we please get the Fedora Podcast artwork refreshed with the new logo?

#577

cc: @x3mboy as the host

hi @computerkid I'll like to fix this issue.

That would be very much appreciated. As im not part of the designs team, I
don't know if just the logo needs to change or the text too. @mizmo, what
need to be done?

Hi @mahnoor123 thanks for getting started on this one! We have pretty strict guidelines around use of the logo, and the logo + team names. See: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines

As this is logo related, I am going to assign it to @duffy as she will need to work on this one.

We already have artwork, we just needed it refreshed with the new stuff

@riecatnor Hi, may I too contribute to this one?

Also, can we use photos from Fedora's social media pages too in the artwork?

Hi @sunidhikashyap as this task is related to our logo, @duffy will be working on this one. Feel free to choose another task from the repo :)

I understand. Thankyou :)

@duffy I know you're the owner on this task, so by no means feel like you need to use any of these options. The issue was mentioned in IRC/Matrix by @computerkid. I was taking the day off of my own work so I thought I'd just take a stab at this one for fun.

As you're probably still breaking in the new logo (and I couldn't find a new style guide spelling out how you want to use it), I kept these conservative. I tried to emphasize the new logo and give it enough separation to not mess it up. The text is Montserrat as spelled out in the old guide. I kept it monochrome to be safe.

The icon used previously in the podcast didn't blend well with the line weights and style of the new logo, so I used a couple alternative icons (and presented one without any icon). I mocked up thumbnails and corresponding episode banners.

The left-right alignment on the episode banners are tricky with the new logo. True vertically centered alignment sits too high, so I eyeballed it. That could still use some slight tweaking.

Anyhow, completely disregard these if they're not helpful and pardon my butting into this issue. If you want to iterate on them I can upload the SVG file and you do what you like.

@ryangorley Hey welcome to the Fedora design team :)!!! I absolutely love this! I like the options with the blue background a little bit better. This is FANTASTIC! What do you think @computerkid and @x3mboy ??!

I love the colouring and the positioning, but I think that the "podcast" word got lost with the size of the fedora logo. Also the audio signal (headset on one proposal, waves on the other proposal) it's so tiny that is almost imperceptible.

Can we play a little bit more with the sizes of the words?

I agree with @x3mboy, I'm on a phone and almost had to squint to see the
podcast part. Idk how, but it would be great if that could be larger/more
readable in small size.

Maybe we could expand the podcast part and put it under the Fedora part? My only issue is I don't want to mess up the fedora design guidelines...

@duffy Cool. :blush:

@x3mboy @computerkid Do you have a preference between the headset, waves, or text-only versions? Picking one to move forward will speed things up a lot.

There are two factors on size that we need to account for:

The first factor is the relative size of the elements to each other, which is going to be influenced by the hierarchy of what is most important for someone to see and our brand guidelines. In this use case I've made the assumption that we want the Fedora brand to be the primary element, and the word podcast subordinate because Fedora is the reason people are listening and podcast is mostly self evident by context, though it should be on there in some fashion. There are trademark protection and creative reasons to be careful about how we use the logo itself. For the time being the clearer the distinction between the logo and the other elements the better probably.

The second factor is specific placement. What is the right size font for a 50x50 pixel thumbnail will be huge for 340x340 pixel one, and vice versa. Ideally we would design a different graphic for each. It looks to me like Soundcloud is using the same graphic in the whole range of sizes. I'm sure the RSS feeds will only pull one. So I'll need you to decide together what size/placement we're optimizing the thumbnail for, recognizing it will almost certainly be illegible or too big depending on the context. (I kind of missed the whole thing about the round avatar on Soundcloud, but I'll get you something for that as well.)

I don't know if all that helps.

TL;DR Let me know what icon you like most. There are some design/legal constraints around the logo that I'm trying to navigate clear of so @duffy (the authority on that stuff) doesn't have to be too involved if she doesn't have a lot of bandwidth. Let me know what size/placement you want to target, recognizing what we do will be perfect there and basically no where else, haha.

My favorite would be the Podcast and the radiating lines with a blue background. B3

Agreed with the radiating lines with the blue background.

About sizing of elements, the previous logo was about right, but the one we use in the podcast website was done specifically for the website, based on the first one mentioned. Also we had a "social media background" that I think should be re-done or re-coloured.

I think these 3 elements (original logo, site logo and background) would serve to clarify the sizes. You include a beautiful 4th element with the "per episode banner", we do it in element (the wordpress theme engine) so probably that can be done there again to match the new theme.

Thanks @computerkid @x3mboy for the feedback. I'm going to focus on the main thumbnail for now and shift over to the other variations when we have a look pinned down.

Here are three variations on the original saved at 340x340, which is the largest size Soundcloud will display the image. I've added a bit of letter spacing to "PODCAST" to help it read better when really small. @duffy I'm curious if you feel like these work with the brand and if you have a preference as well.

Let me know your thoughts.

As a bit of an "outsider" here, I think it's important to note that in our current branding for most Fedora-related services, we actually make the "Fedora" element smaller than the service name element. The idea is to focus on what the thing is.

In this case, we probably want relatively equally sized elements, and we also have a constraint that we need this to be good for various icon sizes (that is, we need square imagery).

Of the current proposed ones, I like the third one the most, but we also need variations that work without any text for smaller sizes as icons.

Sure. But it's all about context and intent.

If we're talking about helping people find a Fedora edition on fedoraproject.org, then emphasizing the edition name will guide someone most quickly to what they want. Prominent Fedora branding would be unnecessary and perhaps add brand noise to the page.

If we're talking about standing out on a list of "fedora" search results on Soundcloud (there are a lot) or in a list of subscriptions in my own podcast app, then the Fedora brand will guide someone most quickly to what they want. The word "podcast" is not particularly helpful, and if it comes at the expense of the brand name it could be detrimental.

In this case, we probably want relatively equally sized elements, and we also have a constraint that we need this to be good for various icon sizes (that is, we need square imagery).

Hierarchy is important visually. Equal sized but separate elements will clash unless one is subordinated by color, font weight, or something else. Bring everything into one close grouping (like the previous logo) and we run into sub-brand issues we're trying to avoid for legal and practical reasons. That aside, this is the flagship community podcast, I think it can (and should) display the core brand with prominence and pride. That's a big deal.

Of the current proposed ones, I like the third one the most, but we also need variations that work without any text for smaller sizes as icons.

See earlier discussion for some context here. The intent is to at least provide an organization icon for Soundcloud that is discrete from the podcast itself for this reason. Our sizing options are limited though. We can't target every size so we have to pick one and make the most of it.

Hey all, sorry I have been tied up for a couple days.

Here are some more options with the DLN logo incorporated. @duffy I'm not sure if 1, 5, and 6 are problematic from a brand guidelines standpoint.

I'll watch for comments. If we can pick one direction here I can get the other variations wrapped up in the same style.

@x3mboy @computerkid It looks like the podcast site is using Elementor for WordPress. Would you like some help updating that theme when we get to that point?

Nothing to be sorry about.

I love the 1st one, I love the blue stripe for the DLN brand. I would like the 1st combined with the 5 one in terms of size (the blue sticker with the podcast word a little bigger) but I think I'll depend on @duffy's answer on brand guidelines, since you think those could be problematic.

@x3mboy @computerkid It looks like the podcast site is using Elementor for WordPress. Would you like some help updating that theme when we get to that point?

Indeed we use elementor. I did the initial template and @computerkid did the finals and he's the current maintainer. I think it would be great to have an extra view in there. You can check fedora-podcast#9 where we talk about the issues on the site.

Oh, and I totally forgot to say: Thanks! The work is looking really good!

I agree, it looks great! 1 is my favorite also

Great! There are designer-y reasons I like 1 being a little smaller (primarily because the hierarchy is clearer and it feels less crowded to me), but here is a sample of the original plus one slightly bigger. We need to get @duffy to sign off on this though because it's starting to look like a sub-brand, which I was originally trying to avoid. We'll see what she says when she has a minute.

d5-review.png

@ryangorley these looks great. I actually prefer the blue lozenge backgds on the "podcast" text but the prob is the blue lozenge competes w the blue bar on the bottom. The blue bar seems heavy to me.

I think #2 is really solid. It doesnt get us into subbrand territory, but you get the podcast blue lozenge as a unit, you dont have the vibration between it and the blue bar at the bottom, and i like the full context of the logo + logotype - i prefer using the full logo + logotype for externally'facing stuff like a podcast (bc perhaps folks seeing it in a listing dont know what fedora is wo the text), and just the mark for internal facing stuff (bc we are already in fedora and we know where we are at that point.) It's really clean, looks officially Fedora, and would stand out well in a listing of other podcast coverarts.

@x3mboy does that rationale maks sense to you?

Thanks @duffy. As the architect of the brand I think we're all happy to defer to your opinion on this. Those are valid points as well. @x3mboy has been concerned about how large (or rather how small) "podcast" is displayed. With that lozenge living down at the bottom I think we have a bit more flexibility scaling that up without causing problems. @x3mboy and @computerkid may appreciate that advantage over their prior top choice. I've mocked up the original X, then larger Y, and Z. Y feels about right for me, I'd be interested to know your thoughts. Would you all be happy to settle on one of these three?

I love version Y.

@x3mboy does that rationale maks sense to you?

@duffy It makes sense to me.

I'm really happy about the result, I think the lozenge solve the size issue. My only questions is how does it look scaled down? e.g.: the logo on spotify or in google podcast.

@ryangorley you have my explicit approval for any of the 3 latest revisions.

Y looks good to me
Is it okay if I send this to @michaeltunnell for youtube? We're going to publish episodes on the Fedora youtube, as the artwork + a voice visualization.

@x3mboy @computerkid @michaeltunnell Here is that graphic at 1000x1000 pixels. Any other formats you all need?

fedora-podcast-square.png

I'd be happy to help with your website. I'm under a pretty heavy load at work, but if you can give me some time I can take a look at it. If so, shoot me an account invite at ryan@freehive.com.

This is awesome. Thank you sooo much! having an SVG would be nice also, if that's alright
With the website we only leave the registration mode open for a little bit, so could we coordinate that in the Fedora design room? Thank you again!

I think this is done then!

I'd like to request that the DLN tag have the same blue color as the Fedora Podcast colors.

Oh my. Hah, artwork is a job never done

Shouldn't that be easy enough to do? You have the SVG and can trivially restyle that...

@michaeltunnell could we do the play button icon in the D with Fedora blue? it looks like the other show cover arts have the play button a diff color. we could darken the grey on the letters too if needed for more contrast? (that grey is a fedora palette color)

that works for me. thanks! 😎👍

@duffy is that thumbs up a sign off?

Yes! Okay, let this ticket never be opened again
