#590 F28 - Get rid of all Docker images and use Container instead
Closed: Fixed 3 days ago by duffy. Opened a year ago by robyduck.

phenomenon

Releng decided to change Docker to a more generic Container, which implies many changes from a web POV, and also needs some redesign.

reason

Container seems to be more appropriate, instead of using Docker. There might also be legal issues with Docker in the near future.

recommendation

We already have different paths for Container images now, but need to get rid of all Docker references in all websites.

We would need new logos to replace our Docker images.

For example:

https://pagure.io/fedora-websites/blob/master/f/alt.fedoraproject.org/static/images/docker-big.png

Hi,

Design team can't really act on this ticket without direction on what the Docker graphics should be replaced with. (Cri-o? I don't know. Who determines this?)

We ideally don't write new content. Who is the 'product owner' for this?

That's a good question, and is the reason why I opened a MIndshare ticket for this change too, because I'd like to get also inputs from Marketing (if possible):
https://pagure.io/mindshare/issue/14

However, I think there is no real product owner we can refer to. I think something related to a generic "containerized" image could perfectly fit our needs, but probably not from a Marketing perspective.

@dwalsh might be able to add some context to this ticket.

They are OCI Images use the OCI Logo.

May I ask if there is any update for this?

I don't have any updates on this. If we can't get it for f28 then that is OK. We'll do it after.

We have to be careful about usage of the OCI mark.
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/trademark-usage/

"Do not use a logo of The Linux Foundation on posters, brochures, signs, websites, or other marketing materials to promote your events, products or services without written permission from The Linux Foundation."

"You are also allowed to use a trademark or logo of The Linux Foundation as a link to the home page of the applicable project or to a web page on The Linux Foundation web site that is relevant to the reference so long as the link is in a manner that is consistent with the preservation of the goodwill and value of the mark. The link and all other usage of a logo of The Linux Foundation shall be done using the official versions of The Linux Foundation logos obtained from The Linux Foundation or its projects."

"Certain marks of The Linux Foundation have been created to enable you to communicate compatibility or interoperability of software or products. In addition to the requirement that any use of a mark to make an assertion of compatibility must, of course, be accurate, the use of these marks must avoid confusion regarding The Linux Foundation’s association with the product. The use of the mark cannot imply that The Linux Foundation or its projects are sponsoring or endorsing the product. "

I'm really confused by these excerpts so we should probably get permission. We need a mockup to get the approval. I am happy to put the OCI image in a mockup to show to the trademark folks but we'll need to replace the text next to the mark. This is what is there now:

--

<docker logo="">

Built-in Docker support

Containerize your own apps, or deploy containerized apps out of the box on Fedora, using the latest technology like Docker.

--

So we could just replace "Docker" with "Open Container Initiative (OCI)" ala the following:

--

<oci logo="">

Built-in Open Container Inititative (OCI) support

Containerize your own apps or deploy containerized apps out of the box on Fedora, using the latest technology like OCI.

--

@dustymabe @robyduck @dwalsh does the above draft seem ok? Let me know ASAP and I'll contact the LF trademark contact to get permission to use the logo.

I think I would add the word "Image" in there somewhere and then remove the "like OCI".

Built-in Open Container Inititative (OCI) image support

Containerize your own apps or deploy containerized apps out of the box on Fedora, using the latest technology like OCI.

"Containerize your own apps or deploy containerized apps out of the box on Fedora, using the latest technology" sounds a bit weird, would this make sense

"Containerize your own apps or deploy containerized apps out of the box on Fedora, using the latest container technology."

?

"Containerize your own apps or deploy containerized apps out of the box on Fedora, using the latest container technology."

+1

OK here's the mockup i'm going to send. Let me know if there's any issues.

(old mockup deleted)

Did we reject the suggestion of including image in the text?

"Built-in Open Container Inititative (OCI) image support"

Sorry I must have copy/pasted the wrong one, does this look ok?

fedora_oci_mockup.png

looks good. bonus points if we could decrease the font ever so slightly so we could get the heading all one one line again.

OK cool, I just formally requested trademark permission and included the mockup. 🤞

@nb were you going to update the website with the new graphic? i noticed it's not updated yet.

Websites ticket https://pagure.io/fedora-websites/issue/891 specifically covers this one item, so i can grab this ticket here, and get it implmented on the websites side as well (i already own websites ticket 891)

@duffy did you ever hear back from the OCI folks about trademark permission?

@duffy @dustymabe have a PR open on the websites queue for this one now:

https://pagure.io/fedora-websites/pull-request/933

just waiting on confirmation that the trademark can be used before proceeding.

@ryanlerch hey i think i fwded you the email i sent to them without getting a response from them a while back - did you get a chance to email them to get perms? if not, let's escalate and get this taken care of. let me know, i can talk to dwalsh and see if he can hook us up with someone directly rather than using the email i used.

Good work on this @ryanlerch! Closing.
