#9864 New Fedora Spin for F34: Fedora i3 Spin
Closed: Fixed 3 years ago by mohanboddu. Opened 3 years ago by jflory7.

The Fedora i3 SIG would like to build our kickstarts in Fedora release engineering infrastructure for Fedora 34. We are looking for a check-off and guidance from Release Engineering to publish the Fedora 34 Change proposal to FESCo. See Fedora-Council/tickets#343 for the corresponding trademark request.

This is a new Fedora Spin featuring the i3 tiling window manager. Why do we want to build the i3 Spin in Fedora?

  • Freedom: The Fedora i3 Spin is composed of and built with Free Software.
  • Friends: The Fedora i3 Spin is a community project built together by the Fedora i3 SIG.
  • Features: The Fedora i3 Spin is an integrated experience with Fedora features end-users are looking for and expect.
  • First: This is the first tiling window manager to feature as its own Fedora deliverable (e.g. Edition, Spin, or a Lab).

You can learn more about our SIG and Spin at the resources below:

Fedora RelEng acknowledges the change, please let us know when you have the kickstarts ready and we can make the pungi config changes to create the i3 spin in composes.

@mohanboddu Thanks! When we have kickstarts ready, should we share them here in this ticket or is there a better place to share them with RelEng?

@jflory7 just do a PR to pagure.io/fedora-kickstarts as rel-eng gets notified and has to approve all those anyway.

Are you intending on doing this just for x86 or for other arches like aarch64 too?

ACK. Will do once our Change proposal is announced.

I see no reason why not.

Well, in principle there's none, but we'd need help from QA to actually check that the ARM image works. Afaik none of the i3 SIG members runs a aarch64 machine and could test this themselves.

We can also organise some hardware if that is useful for the i3 maintainers testing.

If that's possible, I can work on building and testing the spin for aarch64 .

The following PR was opened on fedora-kickstarts to add the ks files for our Spin.
