#8767 Please retire / remove all Rust modules from F31+
Closed: Fixed 4 years ago by ignatenkobrain. Opened 4 years ago by ignatenkobrain.

First of all, some of them were EOL in PDC for last 3 months, but nobody cares (I could not even push to them until adjust PDC EOL date). Second, I've tried to fix some FTBFS, but modules are just stuck in "init" state for 1 hour already. Not saying that I had to re-bootstrap my modules (and they were stuck too). Mass rebuild did not work due to deficiencies in MBS architecture (which was known from the beginning).

Second, I don't see any improvements in this area for at least a year.

Sorry, but modularity is just :poop: and I regret a lot that I have chosen this way of shipping Rust packages. I'll try to find some better way how to deliver Rust apps to users hopefully in F31 release cycle.

Comment on #8265 with ideas.

Thanks and sorry. ⚰️

Is is clever to retire on F31 so near to beta if a better solution is not yet known?

Well, the question is who will maintain those modules? Most of the time I'm not even able to trigger build of them… If somebody from infra will promise to look into fixing issues during F31 lifetime, then sure. I can revisit this.

So I hope things will get better around this soon....

Right now mbs is in the 'we don't maintain it, we just run an instance of it' for infrastructure. The instance is managed by the factory2 team, but they have a lot of other things going on. They want to hand off maint to the pungi / tools team for upstream. Also, the folks building flatpaks (which also uses modules) want to make that path also more supported and maintained and have been talking to CPE management about prioritizing that work.

So, hopefully some improvements are on the way. In the mean time, can you let us know when you hit problems and we can (for now) bug factory2 folks about it? (infrastructure tickets is best).

I think I have cleaned up all the failures from the mass rebuild now, if you see anything lingering from that let me know.

Can we do this sooner than later? I don't want to firefight this 1 day prior to F31 final release.

Ping? Would be good to get this done soon so that we can deal with the fallout before the final freeze starts.

@churchyard let's keep status quo for F31. I'll revisit this in F32.
