#5109 Change live media dirs to i386 to avoid confusion
Closed: Fixed None Opened 12 years ago by kevin.

See: https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/602

We would like to change the dir that live media are in from i686 to i386, and the iso images themselves to be i386 instead of i686.

This would reflect that they are all 32bit images.

If there's some reason we shouldn't/can't do this, feel free to reopen the fesco ticket for more discussion.

Thanks.

i386 in the 32 bit repos tree is there because its the basearch thats used by yum. the images and packages will not run on anything prior to i686, so no i385 i486 or i586 the images have i686 in them and the directory containing them has i686. if we were to change anything it would be to have yum to ignore the basearch it always has and set it to i686 and move the Packages into i686 directories.

I don't understand - the live image is what is easiest to change and has no code dependencies - why suggest the reverse?

just because its easiset and i agree it is doesnt make it the right choice. I would need to change the scripts for building the live images, admittedly minor, as well as whatever work is needed on the website side. Its change and is not without cost. The the benefit truely outweigh the cost. in this case I really don't think so. I dont know.

the Live images since f7 have had i686 in the name in F7 there were in a i386 directory and have been in a i686 directory ever since. http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/releases/7/Live/i386/ http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/releases/8/Live/i686/

I dont know that this wouldn't have unintended consequences and really needs evaluating sooner in the release process, I wont change it for F17 but we can look at whats needed for F18 though we do have a long history of it being as it is

We would like to do this for f18.

re-opening and adding f18 alpha milestone.
We need to do this before alpha... and qa and tools will need to adjust.

Isn't there still confusion due to the ISOs themselves still being named i686? (Although this ticket mentioned the dir specifically, I don't think that was the spirit of it.)

I thought we agreed on the dir, but not the live images...
