#12790 EPEL 8 x86_64 won't sync with Red Hat Satellite

  • Describe the issue
I am using Red Hat Satellite 6.17. I sync the content from EPEL 8, 9, and 10. For EL 9 and EL 10, I defined the repository with the "Complete mirror" policy. For EL 8, when I tried to do that, it refused to sync and threw an error "This repository uses features which are incompatible with 'mirror' sync. Please sync without mirroring enabled." I changed the sync type to "Content only" and the sync completed. I asked the Satellite folks what was happening, and I was told it's because the EL8 EPEL repo is set up to use delta RPMs, but there are no delta RPMs. I was told that since the metadata for the EPEL repo defines delta RPMs and pulp doesn't support them, the Satellite server refuses to sync. Honestly, I don't really understand that, since the EPEL 9 repo also uses delta RPMs and pulp syncs it fine. Maybe something in the way the metadat for EPEL 8 is generated or something?

I checked with Carl W George and he said "it does look like we have drpms disabled in all versions, so i don't know why those still exist. Can you file a releng issue about this? i'll keep looking into it but will need advice from some of the other admins."

I was slightly mistaken in my initial look at this over chat with @tcameron when I said that drpms was disabled for all versions. It is disabled for EPEL 10.0/10.1 and EPEL 9, but it is still enabled for EPEL 8. EPEL 10.0/10.1 and 9 were disabled last month in fedora-infra/ansible#2391. Strangely, EPEL 8 doesn't appear to have any drpm files, but EPEL 9, EPEL 10.0, and EPEL 10.1 still have drpm files from last month.

I think the path forward will be to disable drpms for EPEL 8, and delete the leftover drpm files from the other repos, but would love a second opinion from other releng folks.

This makes sense to me.
