#11195 Build minimal iso for x86_64
Closed: It's all good a year ago by pbrobinson. Opened a year ago by leam.

  • Describe the issue

Build the minimal.iso, similar to the aarch64 image. Actually, all archs should have a minimal, for those who have custom requirements.

  • When do you need this? (YYYY/MM/DD)

Whenever. Sooner is better, but hey, it's the holiday season.

  • When is this no longer needed or useful? (YYYY/MM/DD)

Should be a permanent thing.

  • If we cannot complete your request, what is the impact?

I'll fuss a bit, and then figure out a workaround.

Isn't this what the "everything" net install ISO is for?

A net install requires a network connection to the source repo, doesn't it? Sorry, I haven't worked with the "everything" before, just with minimals. With a minimal ISO I can kickstart a box, and get a running OS without an external connection. I can then configure the box, and install stuff as/if needed.

It shouldn't need network for the minimal base install.

To be clear in terms of .iso installers the aarch64 architecture produces exactly the same installers as all the other architectures. The minimal image you refer to that aarch64 has is a pre installed raw disk image that you can just dd out for devices like the Raspberry Pi but it's not an installer iso image. We could potentially create those for x86_64 and there has been interest in the past.

Okay, my apologies, it's been a while. I think my old process was to use the minimal iso as a the initial boot from cd option, and then have a very minimal install. In that I was likely confusing the two types of minimal. If I can boot from the netinst, and start a kickstart, it should do what I need.

I'm not much for laying out disks via dd, except for things like the RPi. Even then, I'd rather not.

Unless I'm more confused than normal, we should be able to close this. Concur?
