When I edit the metadata of an issue and select a closed-as reason such as "fixed" I would like pagure to close the issue when I hit the update button. It seems that it just ignores the reason when I do not explicitly choose the closed status as well.

That is correct that is what it does at the moment.
We should be able to improve this.
