#87 Fedora Mentors Summit
Closed: Complete 2 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 5 years ago by jonatoni.

After the council hackfest in the US, I had a conversation with @mattdm and @bex regarding the way we can get more new contributors. One of the things we currently do is participating in internships like Google Summer of Code (GSoC), Outreachy and Google Code-In (GCI) but we struggle to find mentors that want to participate and are willing to help and guide people that are interested to get involved. One of the ways we thought that could be helpful is having our own Mentors Summit, to encourage people from our community to be mentors. During the summit, they will have the possibility to exchange experience with each other, having different sessions regarding mentorship, giving tips on how to interact with the students/newbies etc.

If you all like the idea I will work with @sumantrom to write a proposal about this and share it with Council.

Thoughts/feedback?

+1 based on the rough thoughts. I would like to reserve the funding vote for the final plan. This seems to not need anything other than no one to say -1 in the next couple of days as it is more like a "request to write something up" to which the answer is always "YES!" Full disclosure, I was at the table when this was discussed.

@bex I am really sorry, I was supposed to work with @jonatoni on this and couldn't get the time but I promise I will work on this one out by this weekend

no worries :) we are all busy. It is year-end :D

Same for me, I didn't have the chance to work on it - sorry about it
Will coordinate with @sumantrom during the weekend  :confetti_ball:

Brainstorming is in progress. This ticket will be updated when we kinda finalize on a struct which will be open for RFC

In related news, I am trying to organize a global D&I Summit based on offline conversations over the last 2-3 years and recent conversations at GUADEC with the GNOME Engagement Team. Mentorship is an important topic to me, so maybe I could try to "rep" this idea over there. Since I suspect Fedora is not the only one wrestling with best practices on mentorship.

Happy to help with this

Taking a look at this in the Mindshare Committee-- getting a general +1 to involvement/participation/leading a mentorship session at the D&I summit. Look forward to next steps

@jonatoni and I have started working on this.
We have a repository [0] where we create issues for planning/tasks and discussion mostly happens async. We are planning to create a group for folks who would like to volunteer but we are still in early phase for that.
We have the dates in hand (April 1st and 2nd) [1].
There is a lot of planning to do (brainstorming) - like talks/sessions/workshops/fun sessions ideas
If you have something in mind (resources, speakers, talks), please do leave a comment on the ticket (and if the relevant ticket doesn't exist, replying to this ticket or pinging me in mindshare channel would be really appreciated.

This happened in April of 2022! Closing this one as complete, let's open a new ticket for the 2023 version if needed :)
