#75 Sponsorship For Singapore Hackathon
Closed: Complete by bex. Opened by woohuiren.

I was wondering if Fedora would be interested in sponsoring an event called Hack N Roll [0] so that Fedora can get a presence in this event. This is an annual Hackathon held in Singapore by students from National University of Singapore (specifically an interest group named "NUS hackers").

I've contacted the organizers and they were willing to give additional benefits without additional costs as Fedora is a FOSS project. I'm thinking of the $1000 SGD sponsorship for a "Best Opensource Contribution Hack" prize. $1000 SGD roughly translates to around $720 USD.

I think this is helpful for Fedora as it allows us to reach out to Comp Sci students. They've got over 500 participants last year and I think at least 300 of them are our target audience (taking into account that there will be business students as well). Having a good and large target audience will leave some impression and inform them of Fedora's existence. Right now, there are many folks here in the region that are uninformed about the importance of FOSS and Linux. Sponsoring such a prize would incentivize and motivate folks to kick-start their contributions to FOSS.

I don't think the prize's scope should be limited to Fedora as it would be a little too small and relatively difficult for audiences that do not actively use Linux distributions.

What success would look like would be having 20 students being interested in Fedora and maybe even 1 or 2 future contributors. From there, we can follow up and help them join the Fedora community. Starting with getting them to join our Fedora or FOSS related meetups or workshops.

What do the other Fedora members think?

Will anyone be onsite to motivate Fedora interest or is this just a sponsorship/advertising?

I too am interested in more details about what will be involved -- if it's just a sponsorship of the hackathon, or if there will be any hands-on Fedora instruction, etc.

@woohuiren, can you please give us more details?

@woohuiren we discussed this in our meeting today - people would like more details on what we are doing to help achieve our success outcome that you present. I've added a specific question above, as have others.

Responding via phone email as I'm in camp right now. Apologies for typos.

Thanks for the responses from the Mindshare team and committee.

So from what I understand, its a bit too late to do the sponsorship. But I
think it would be good to consider for next year. I raised this request on
a short notice and at a not so right timing (before festive holidays).
Apologies on my part.

To answer your questions:

No, there would not be a hands-on workshop or talk. They offered us to hang
out around the area without a booth as only gold or platinum sponsors get
it.

Yes, I'll be hanging out in the area to answer questions and talk to some
folks.

We will get a logo slot on their banners and mention in their emails and
opening note.

On a side note, they did request for us to have speakers at their monthly
meetup (Friday Hacks). I think it would be good to have some Fedora folks
that are coming for FOSSASIA to speak about Fedora. I believe there might
be some prominent Fedora folks coming to Singapore this March for FOSSASIA?

I'm not sure if I should open a new ticket for the side note?

@woohuiren Please correct me if I am not understanding, it sounds like you're now just letting us know you'll be at this event. Do you need support from us for it?

As for speakers, I think this is a great idea. How can we help you? I gather you need to locate speakers, in your area, or with a reason to be flown there and then propose them.

Sorry, my response was a bit confusing.

Only if we were going to sponsor. But as I mentioned, its a bit too late now.

By chance/convenience. From what I know, there's an conference event upcoming in March. If folks from Fedora are coming to speak for that conference event, it would also be great to have them speak at NUS Hackers.

@woohuiren what else is needed here?

closing as this seemed informational. @woohuiren please reopen if we missed something.
