#68 Create new Telegram bridge for #fedora-ambassadors

Summary

Create new Telegram group and provision a bridge for #fedora-ambassadors

Background

The Telegram <=> IRC bridges are a useful tool to increase engagement in our existing infrastructure, especially for contributors where IRC is not a convenient option. The Fedora Ambassadors are an international group and many of the people who support Fedora have diverse needs for access. I predict creating a Telegram group bridged to IRC will increase engagement in the existing IRC channel (which is almost completely inactive today).

Details

I believe someone from Mindshare Committee should create a Telegram group for Fedora Ambassadors globally. Then, once it is created, I can work with someone to get a Telegram bot API key to run the bridge.

Perhaps socializing this on the Ambassadors list is a good idea. If this change is made, we should communicate it well.

Outcome

  • More active discussion in existing Ambassador discussion channels
  • Better engagement with contributors where IRC is not a convenient or dependable option

I'm not opposed to this, other than to say I'm not sure I like the precedent of declaring Telegram the "winner" so-to-speak on how we bridge to IRC. There are plenty of messaging platforms out there, and I don't know why we'd want to declare one as the "winner".

Good question. I suggested Telegram for two reasons:

  1. Past precedent of already using Telegram <=> IRC bridges with other Fedora sub-projects
  2. Numbers of region-specific groups managed by those I have seen active in other Ambassador activity in Fedora:
    • Fedora Albania: 37 members
    • Moje Fedora (CZ): 87 members
    • Fedora Ecuador: 37 members
    • Fedora D/A/CH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland): 32 members
    • Fedora India: 155 members
    • Fedora Indonesia: 520 members [I did not recognize the admins, but I noticed @sumantrom was a member and could speak about the group more?]
    • Fedora LATAM: 250 members
    • Fedora México: 35 members

Note most of these groups are language-specific. Therefore, it is unclear what kind of engagement we will get in an English-speaking group. But, given the above context, it is clear to me there are strong pockets of the Fedora contributor community already using Telegram actively. I don't know of another platform where we have this many communities led by existing Fedora Ambassadors.

This context leads me to choose Telegram, not because of X GUI or Y features, but because this feels like the best use of our resources (time, energy, infrastructure) given the knowledge we have today about these existing communities.

Pie-in-the-sky RFE

To future-proof choosing Telegram today, we could consider migrating to matterbridge in the future. Matterbridge is a Golang project that is more or less a chat server in itself. It supports bridging the following platforms:

  • Mattermost
  • IRC
  • XMPP
  • Gitter
  • Slack
  • Discord
  • Telegram
  • Hipchat
  • Rocket.chat
  • Matrix
  • Steam
  • Twitch
  • Zulip

In the long-term, this could be a safeguard to the concerns we are setting Telegram apart from other platforms. However, I don't think this ticket should be blocked on using Matterbridge. We can move forward today with Teleirc, and later migrate to something more inclusive like Matterbridge.

I'm +1 on this. Telegram have been quite popular in the Fedora Community, and this can result in very interesting inter-regions discussions

I'd like to see more support from ambassadors for this. @nb is our current Ambassadors rep and his opinion here is very important.

@bex How do you suggest moving forward?

@tjzabel and I on the TeleIRC SIG can help move this forward, but we need someone to create the group and bot as documented in Request a new TeleIRC bridge bot.

@jflory7 The Revamp team agrees as we proceed with the agenda, we want to put the infrastructure around Fedora Ambassadors. For a long time, the different parts of Fedora Ambassadors were split by regions and it's time we have one TG group to unite all of it and bridge it to a Matrix/Element. The value it offers us is to hold the event discussions and challenges faced while one wanted to host one. This will also be a place to share good practices Ambassdors can follow. This is right up the alley now and @jflory7, would you mind taking the charge to create one group, smear it with the official Fedora CoC and then bridge it to chats, if its already not done.

Hi @jflory7 thank you for this ticket and idea! We are working on repo cleanup in today's Mindshare meeting and this ticket came up. We decided to close this ticket as stale as we now have Element/Matrix and want to encourage folks to use that as much as possible. We also don't have an Ambassador telegram group (as far as we can tell). If there is renewed interested, feel free to reopen or initiate a new ticket. Thanks again!
