#344 Sponsor Akademy 2022
Closed: Complete a year ago by jflory7. Opened 2 years ago by ngompa.

I propose we sponsor Akademy 2022 at the "Gold" (10,000 Euro) level. This provides the following benefits, according to the brochure (pdf):

  • Logo and description on the conference website
  • 3 minute "lightning talk" in the event schedule
  • Thank you during opening session
  • Networking event with KDE, e.V. board
  • Ability to distribute promotional materials (i.e. swag) at conference
  • Logo on conference platform shown between sessions
  • Logo on conference badge/lanyard
  • Banner in workshop/hacking area

Akademy is the KDE community's annual contributor conference focused on showcasing and planning the future of KDE technologies. This year's event is hybrid and will be held from October 1 to October 7 in Barcelona, Spain.

Last year, we sponsored at the Platinum level (the Gold tier is the equivalent for this year's event), and that sponsorship was a tremendous success for the KDE SIG. There has been tremendous positivity from the KDE community toward Fedora, we've substantially increased the number of fully active contributors, and a number of prominent KDE developers have switched to Fedora and help us out continually as we develop the KDE spin, Kinoite, and other KDE related efforts in Fedora.

My hope for this sponsorship is that we can recreate that success again and help drive interest in Fedora Kinoite and the KDE SIG's work on bringing in KDE Plasma Mobile for a future Fedora Mobile Edition with the Mobility SIG.

I'm a little confused, the gold level includes the "logo on badge" or not?

just a question before voting

It should include the logo on the badge. @apol can clarify if there's some confusion there though.

There's a handy table at the end. And yes, it's on the front face of the badge or lanyard.

I was already there last year and It was a great experience for us and all the new comers and among kde developers It was a success, especially hallway track was nice as well.

So +1000 to that :) (+1)

I'm +1 for sponsor it
Maybe we need discuss if gold or silver level fits better for us.

since we sponsored €5000 last year, I am +1 to silver level.
Do we collect some kind of metrics or number to count interest (or new contributors)?
I am Neutral (0) on gold sponsorship

I don't know about specific metrics, but I've been basing this on increased upstream interest in Fedora KDE via participation in our matrix room and our meetings.

Additionally, from a contributor perspective, we've three new people, two of which have become regular contributors to the development of Fedora KDE. It has effectively doubled the sustained contributor base. The third one is starting out as a new contributor. All three of them came to us through growth in positive press boosted by last year's Akademy sponsorship.

We also had several talks at Nest with Fedora last year related to KDE-centric Fedora development, which was directly driven by our participation in Akademy.

I am Neutral (0) on gold sponsorship

I would prefer to sponsor at the Gold level because it puts our name into the workshop and hacker spaces, which is what most of the event is actually about. A good deal of super-charged KDE development occurs at this time (at least in previous in-person Akademy events), and I would like our name associated with that.

Hi @ngompa thank you for the additional info & context for the requested increase in sponsorship. We discussed this in our meeting today, and we have just a couple more questions for you:
- Will we have Fedora related talks at the event?
- Do we have any goals or plans for inclusion in the hacker space?
- Would it be possible to give the Fedora<3'sKDE site a refresh with some new info?
- Will you/someone else from KDE SIG be able to commit to heading up the various engagements related to the sponsorship?
Thanks!

Hi @ngompa thank you for the additional info & context for the requested increase in sponsorship. We discussed this in our meeting today, and we have just a couple more questions for you:

Fine with me. Answered below:

  • Will we have Fedora related talks at the event?

Yes, I've submitted a talk on the state of Fedora KDE.

  • Do we have any goals or plans for inclusion in the hacker space?

The schedule isn't available yet, but I've communicated a desire to work with upstream on both the preinstall experience for having Fedora KDE preloaded on devices and the Wayland experience to close the gaps and prepare for the eventual elimination of the X11 session entirely.

I intend to see to having those desires reflected in some of the workshop and hacking events.

  • Would it be possible to give the Fedora<3'sKDE site a refresh with some new info?

Absolutely! I have some ideas of a basic refresh, but if we can get some of our mobility stuff in place, I'm hoping to add that to the page as well.

  • Will you/someone else from KDE SIG be able to commit to heading up the various engagements related to the sponsorship?

I am trying to figure arrangements to travel to Barcelona for Akademy. I will also see if any European members of the SIG will be able to attend in person as well.

Thanks!

No problem!

I like what Neal is saying about getting our name in the right place, but 10k seems like... a lot, and kind of a big jump from what we did before, or for GUADEC for that matter. If we're going to do that, I'd like to see a really big and concrete expected outcome beyond some technical collaboration. We're way down the list here, for example: https://kde.org/distributions/

I'd rather see us help with travel for getting Fedora SIG members from Europe there.

That website used to be randomized (except for those that are KDE Patrons), I guess it isn't anymore.

If we want to be on the top of the list, we'd need to become a KDE Patron. I won't say no to that, of course. Being able to have a "Patron of KDE" logo on the Fedora KDE websites would be very nice, indeed.

We could split the €10K request into €5K for becoming a KDE Patron and €5K for Akademy itself. That would certainly result in the changes you'd like to see.

the difference between Silver and gold is a lot, actually I don't see real real advantage to justify make the jump.

Maybe we can discuss the become a member of kde or KDE patron in another ticket.

  • Individuals €100 (Join the game) * Corporations €1000
Supporting members of KDE are entitled to display the "Member of KDE" logo on their website or in printed materials.

Corporations or individuals wishing to show exceptional financial commitment to the KDE project may extend their supporting membership with additional patronage. Patrons of KDE pay yearly membership fees of:

Individuals and small companies €5000
Large corporations €10000

These patrons of KDE are entitled to display the exclusive "Patron of KDE" logo on their website or in printed materials.

I've split the KDE Patron request to #352.

For this request, I'm happy to accept downgrading it to Silver. Also notably, it looks like Ubuntu has sponsored at the Silver tier (Canonical is a KDE Patron as well).

cool. +1 for silver level

@ngompa we discussed this in today's Mindshare meeting and we are good to move forward at the silver level. I will reach out the email noted in the sponsorship brochure to get things rolling. I think we could use some support to make sure we are taking advantage of the benefits related to the silver sponsorship: lightning talk and networking event with the KDE Board. Have you decided if you will be able to attend?

Yes, I intend to be there.

A few follow ups for this sponsorship of Akademy. The organizers followed up about some of the details:

-Give a presentation (3 min. lightning talk)
A member or members of your team could give a short presentation (3 min. lightning talk) on Sunday, 2nd of October, during Akademy.

-Network event with KDE Board
We are going to have a network dinner with KDE Board and other sponsors where 1-2 people of your team could attend. Potential date for the dinner is on Saturday, 1st of October 2022. Who are your team members that could attend the dinner?

-Distribute promotional material at conference
You could have a space where you could distribute your promotional material.

-Place banner in reception area
You could place a banner in the reception area.

I will manage sending the swag and banner.

@ngompa would you be up to give a 3min lightning talk? And would you like to attend the network dinner? Do you have someone else in mind from Fedora that will be there and would like to attend the dinner as well?

I can do those. I think @jgrulich, @siosm, @marcdeop, or @thunderbirdtr are coming, so any one of them could also come to the dinner.

Sadly I'm not going to Akademy this year, I'll be attending remotely. It would be awesome to meet you all in person, but this time I have to give priority to my growing family :baby:.

Friendly ping- would someone else who will be at Akademy like to attend the network dinner as a Fedora representative? The organizers are following up to confirm the details. Thanks!

I should be able to attend. I've filed for an advocate request in https://pagure.io/mindshare/issue/363

i'll attend the event so I can represent Fedora.

Hi @ngompa and @siosm I think we have finished up things from the sponsorship side- could you please link to an event report (A write up on CommBlog, Discussion.fpo, personal blog, or recording from the event would all be sufficient). It would be great to know what our Fedora presence was like at the event, any outcomes, etc. :) Thanks!

Fyi @riecatnor, @siosm sent his akademy blog posts on other ticket already and we closed it

I think we can close this one now
