#296 Swag request for local Linux Day 2021 – Catania - 23 October 2021
Closed: Not possible 2 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 2 years ago by giupardeb.

I am Giuseppe Parasiliti and I am member of GNU/Linux User group of Catania (https://www.catania.linux.it/).

Background

The Linux Day, https://www.linuxday.it/2021/, is an annual event mainly organized by local LUGs that will be held in various places around the country. Some of these events are little ones limited to a bunch of passionate people and tinkerers, while other ones could be prominent occasions to meet developers and other kind of FLOSS contributors.
The audience (and the number of attendees) you can meet at the event are: curious people, beginners, hobbyists, high school students, IT professionals, university students (where there is an university), makers, and so on.

I would like to advocate Giuseppe's request.
In the past years I took the responsibility to make a single request for some swag that I sent to people willing to represent Fedora at these local events around Italy. (In the past someone else, I can remember caterpillar, did this work).

You may imagine, in the past year it was not possible to organize the Linux Day face to face, so a single online event was held. This year the situation seems to be a little bit relaxed, so in addition to the online event, there is the possibility to organize face to face events (with the proper precautions), and some local LUGs are working in that way (with the hope that in October the situation doesn't precipitate).

In my region nobody will organize any face to face event, so also this year I will not act as a single point of contact. So please take into account Giuseppe's request. Thanks.

Ah! This is the 2019 event report (also from Catania): https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/linux-day-2019-italy/#more-8311

Thank you very much for organizing this. I am in favor of providing you with swag. +1

Hi @giupardeb thank you for opening this ticket and organizing this! The Mindshare Committee discussed this in their weekly meeting, and overall we would like to get the swag out to you. Due to Covid, we would like to ensure that any events we support are following local mandates. Please provide Covid guidance for the event as well as a dated document from local authorities about current Covid restrictions.

Once I have those, I will send them along to the Council to get a quick approval. The last Council F2F in March 2020, we decided we were not supporting in person events yet. I don't foresee an issue, it is just a matter of the topic not coming up again until this point :)

Hello @riecatnor . Thank you so much fot your time! We trying to return to normal. On 23/10/2021, the local GNU/Linux Day will occur at the University of Catania (Sicily, Italy). A full day of speeches and activities with other FOSS enthusiasts. The event will take place face to face on the University premises. To combat the pandemic and reduce infections, to access the University, each person must have a green pass (that allows us to check the vaccination status ). At the request of the University, the Linux User Group of Catania will ask every spectator who intends to participate in the event, to necessarily register on one of our platforms to track and safeguard the situation." here (https://www.salute.gov.it/imgs/C_17_notizie_5606_0_file.pdf) you can find the official document of Ministry of Health about the Sicily (I'm sorry but it is only italian)

I am waiting for any necessary information.

Thank you!

cool, +1 to send swag all looks well planned.

@giupardeb thank you for the update and providing the document. I am going to send this to the Council and I will get back to you asap. Thank you for your patience!

Thanks to you! I will wait!

Hi @giupardeb this request has been approved! The Council reviewed the situation, and gave their okay. Please open a private ticket on the fedora-budget repo [0] using the swag-shipment template and we can work those details out there.

We hope the event is a success and we look forward to an event report later on. We will keep this ticket open to ensure we follow up :)

Thank you so much @riecatnor . I opened the issue yesterday :D

Thanks @giupardeb I will follow up there :)

Hi @giupardeb,
How did the event go? Would you be able to provide an event report
Thank you :)

Hello everyone, we inform you that, unfortunately, due to the unavailability of universities and schools due to the presence of the Covid, we have not been able to realize our annual GNU/Linux Day. We are very sorry, also because we have tried (proposing all possible precautions) throughout October and even November to send emails and make requests in other institutions, but no one has been able to take responsibility for hosting such an event, forcing us to cancel it. GNU/Linux Day has been our flagship event over the years, and not doing it after getting everyone's support hasn't been pleasant at all. It is not our only event and the LUG is not only this, so in the next year we will aim to make others, of lesser importance.
We use the mailing list (in Italian unfortunately) to coordinate and the list on the organization is public, if anyone wants to see it, you can subscribe and read our messages. If you want read the our discussion, click here (https://lists.catania.linux.it/hyperkitty/list/lug@catania.linux.it/thread/GH7GGCUQ3AGB72UDYM7PN2KXCO4ZVITH/) (in italian unfortunately)

You have given us tremendous support and we thank you enormously, in the next events we will include Fedora and the support given, and when there is a concrete event, we will let you know.

me and the LUG group sincerely thank fedora to support us.
