#261 Sponsor Linux App Summit
Closed: Complete 2 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 3 years ago by bcotton.

I propose we sponsor the Linux App Summit at the "Backer" (1500 Euro) level. This provides the following benefits, according to the prospectus (pdf):

  • Logo on the conference website
  • 45 minute "office hours" in the event schedule
  • Thank you during opening session

openSUSE is currently a Backer-level sponsor and Canonical is sponsoring at the Trendsetter (3000 Euro) level.

LAS is a join effort between GNOME and KDE focused on building a common app ecosystem for Linux. This year's event is virtual and will be held 13-15 May.

A bit unrelated but maybe something, I can add.
The Outreach Revamp team has submitted a talk in this LAS.

What do you expect for the project to gain from doing this?
How can would we identify that this was a success after the event?

To be honest, a lot of the reasoning is competitive pressure. With openSUSE and Ubuntu sponsoring, it's good for us to be there, too.

Since this is, AFAIK, the first time Fedora is sponsoring this event I view this as an exploratory sponsorship. I'd like to see our office hours be "busy". I'd say if we can get 10% of attendees to engage with our office hours, I'd call that a success. After the event, I'll have a better sense of what success would look like in subsequent years.

To put "it's good for us to be there" in more specific terms: we want app ecosystem folks to see Fedora Linux as a valuable platform and significant player in both the GNOME and KDE ecosystems. So, I think engagement with app authors is part of what we should measure.

I see. Do we have enough volunteers that will deliver this message and prepare content for this event to back this up?

Is this a reason to get someone to tell the details about https://src.fedoraproject.org/projects/flatpaks/* ?
Wil we get something compelling such as https://fedoralovespython.org/ but for the target audience of this conference?
What's the opinion of the the Workstation Working Group, KDE Sig and Silverblue team about this? Are they on board to leave a lasting impression at the event?

I closed this issue because I'm not personally interested in driving this sponsorship request at this point. Reopening if Mindshare wants to continue to pursue it, but I am unsubscribing from notifications.

Possibly someone from the Workstation team would be interested?

The Mindshare Committee met yesterday and we would like to move forward with this sponsorship. We have folks willing to staff the office hours but we do feel we need an expert in attendance as well. I am looking into that with @mattdm and will provide an update soon.

Hey folks, I just got an update that @mclasen and folks from the Workstation WG are willing to join for the office hours. I will look into next steps now to see if we can still pursue the sponsorship, and follow up here shortly.

Hey folks! This sponsorship is happening, we are on their page officially, and the sponsorship amount has been sent.

Make sure to register: https://conf.linuxappsummit.org/event/3/registrations/6/

There will be Fedora office hours on Saturday May 15th at 1300UTC.

I am working on getting a badge created as well: https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/821

We attend LAS and it was a success :) Closing this ticket as complete.
