Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE) is a yearly Linux, free software, and open source conference that takes place in Pasadena, California.
SCaLE 18x – the 18th year of the Southern California Linux Expo – takes place on Mar. 5-8, 2020.
SCaLE covers a region that spans the west coast, but also includes many guests worldwide. We as Ambassadors see the event as a focal point that draws visitors from all over the state of California and around the world. Since this event is the only one of its kind in this geographical area, we can provide Fedora outreach and education to the Greater Los Angeles area. Most of the attendees are from locations that have and participate in Linux User Groups in their local states.
Each year, we bring forth the vision that Fedora is more than just another distribution. We interact with guests to see how they find Fedora useful, versatile, and feature-rich in their daily lives demonstrate how helpful the community is. Also the venue is in proximity to Pasadena, drawing locals and neighboring communities.
We plan to provide booth demonstrations of the distribution and to entertain feedback and discussion. Our goal is to educate attendees about the various spins and environments available.
Event Location The event primarily takes place at the Pasadena Convention Center.
Swag needs (and why)
T-shirts, stickers, pens, anything encourage guests to stop by and visit.
In the past, installation media have been popular among visitors, many of them stopped by to try Fedora in their own machines. Since DVDs are kind of deprecated, we may want to have USB flash drives available to hand over upon request.
Banner shipment is also requested
I am requesting budget for @aacosta and @lajuggler to attend and help with the Fedora booth. Tentative Estimate: Parking - $100 Hotel - $840 (shared room) Travel - $950 (air travel / ground transport for @aacosta), $40 (gas for @lajuggler) SCaLE Pass - $225 ($75 x 3 total) [TBD May be included in exhibitor’s kit] Basic Exhibitor Booth - TBD [Cost depends on if complimentary booth is offered by the conference]
Conference attendees, especially those who use Fedora, are our focus.

Well, it looks pretty good. Last year, there was a lot of redhatters there. Maybe you can tell us about the speeches you and any other of the crew will plan to give? It's 10 days until deadline for talks proposals, do you already submit one?
I'm totally +1 to this, but We will want more info about what you plan to do over there.
@lajuggler checking in here on additional info. Please provide that when you can, thanks!
@x3mboy and @riecatnor:
We are enthusiastic about exhibiting what's new and exciting for Fedora to our guests.
Back in November, @aacosta and I submitted a team presentation, Fedora 31 Highlights, along with other individual presentations. We have learned recently that the presentations were not chosen in light of the many presentations curated.
Despite this, we would like to still promote outreach to guests, if given the opportunity and financial support. We contribute throughout-the-week support and referrals to the Red Hat team.
As you can see from last year’s event: https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/fedora-at-scale-17x-2019-event-report-pasadena-california/
our Fedora team saved the week by providing swift support to the Linux Foundation InstallFest with the added bonus of introducing guests to Linux on the Fedora platform.
Alex and Ivan meanwhile provided translation that connected our bilingual speakers with the resources they need. Perry and Scott also provided demos and assisted with support answers/referrals.
Please let us know your decision soon as Early Bird registration is closing imminently (1/12/2020), room availability is dwindling, and travel arrangements will need to be made.
Thank you for your support.
@lajuggler thank you for the detailed info. Generally +1 to this request. Are you organizing the booth for Fedora?
+1
@riecatnor : I am, along with assistance with our local team described above.
@x3mboy and @riecatnor and et al.: We have great news to share.
Due to an apparent e-mail delay issue, @aacosta and I have been informed that our Fedora presentation has been selected. See: https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/18x/speakers
Are there enough +1's for us to proceed with pre-booking travel and hotel and possible registration?
@lajuggler, that is great news! Yes, go ahead and start booking :) Good luck for an awesome event, and please provide a report after. Receipts and reimbursement info can go in a new ticket on fedora-budget.
Cheers!
@lajuggler I have the Event Box and Banner up here. Gotta get that to ya some how.
@mattdm / @bex / @bcotton / @nb What are the next steps for securing additional Event Box swag?
I have the event box for our region (Pacific). I'll take some pics of what = we have left in it. I'll need shipping labels to get it to ya.

Hi @lajuggler coordinating with me is the next step on securing additional swag for the Event Box :)
Let's get the breakdown of what is in the box currently and go from there.
@steelaworkn pics would be great, thanks! The cost of the shipping label can be reimbursed by Fedora, just need a ticket opened with the receipt on fedora-budget
Here is the current state of our event box. We have a few stickers and lots of pens. The banner still looks good as well as the table cloth. I'll let y'all take it from there @lajuggler. <img alt="EventBox2020.jpg" src="/mindshare/issue/raw/files/0a0f8e10b92c3c6677970271ef75f2c182f64ef00bce9ff7f2bdc1fcc61a49c2-EventBox2020.jpg" />
Thanks for the heads up @riecatnor and @steelaworkn.
Might we able to request additional: Fedora stickers (bubble type and hex type) T shirts (if any) Fedora branded USB thumb drives (if any) Fedora keycap cover (for the meta-key) *Fedora ribbons for badges, or a maybe about $150 in budget to cover making Fedora branded ribbon badges
Thanks!
+1 no problem here about this event
@lajuggler +1 to the new swag. I will work on getting those items out to you. Do you have a vendor in mind for the ribbons?
Thank you @hhlp and @riecatnor .
We have Ribbons Galore https://www.ribbonsgalore.com/ in mind as a vendor. Do we have authorization to draw up the designs and immediate order for 300 1-5/8x4 ribbons, as the event rapidly approaches?
@lajuggler please open a ticket on https://pagure.io/design/issues with this info/request for the ribbons, and please provide lead time and need by date. Thanks!
Hi @lajuggler I have put in an order for swag to come from our Raleigh fulfillment center with the rest of the things they are shipping to Scale 18x. They are requesting a booth number to get the swag delivered straight there :) please provide that number. Thanks!
@riecatnor With @duffy 's design assistance, we have placed an order for the ribbons. They are slated to arrive just before our event starts. Please let us know how we can arrange for reimbursement for the submitted order. Thanks!
@riecatnor Regarding the swag order, thank you so much for that!! We very much appreciate all your efforts. :) :) :)
Our booth number is: 512.
Please note that the venue advises that 3/5 is the first day packages may arrive. Please contact me directly if you would like to ship for arrival sooner than this date.
Thank you again!
By the way, @riecatnor, is there a general place to post the following information, provided by the conference? Feel free to pass it on to mailing lists, social media, event calendars, etc.
Registration for the upcoming SCaLE conference may be found here: https://register.socallinuxexpo.org/reg6/
Use Fedora's promo code for 40% discount: FED40
@lajuggler thanks for that info! If you want you can provide me with text for a tweet, I would be happy to shoot that out to the masses :P
An added note- I have ordered an upright banner for this event. It will need to be shipped back to Red Hat Raleigh once the event is over. Your contact for that will be Veronica Cooley(RH events coordinator), she will stop by the booth to meet ya'll and give further instructions.
Metadata Update from @riecatnor: - Issue tagged with: needs event report
We discussed the open tickets tagged needs event report during our Mindshare Committee Meeting in Nov. 4 2020. Based on the extraordinary circumstances of this year, and the length of time since the event took place, we are closing this ticket. Please consider writing a report for the event still, we would welcome it, and make sure to prioritize reporting for future events. Thanks!
