#148 Paris Open Source Summit (December 2019)
Closed: Complete 4 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 4 years ago by eseyman.

The French teams have run out of goodies to hand out at booth. FTR, the next planned event is the Paris Open Source Summit in December.

We really need a bit of everything (stickers, pens, mugs, ...). The only items
I have in significant quantities are the microfiber cloths we made a while back.

I'll then dispatch the goodies between the Lyon, Paris and Nice teams.

Hi @eseyman we've moved to a model where we tend to send swag on an as-needed basis to prevent stock piles from building up. This is especially useful with the upcoming desire to change the logo.

Can you share details about the events?

Also, can you please remove your identifying details so this ticket can be public? When it is time to ship, we use a ticket in the fedora-budget repo. This lets us be transparent about the conversations.

You may also find the mindshare docs useful to review.

@eseyman I would love to know more about the event and what activities are you planning for the booth?

Ah. This is interesting.

The next event we have on the agenda is the Paris Open Source Summit on the 10th and 11th December. I'm presuming there will be a community village where Fedora-Fr can have a booth and talk to people about Fedora, inciting non-users to give Fedora a try and users to contribute, but it's sufficiently far off in time that I can't state that for a fact. All I've seen from the 2019 edition is a CfP for talks.

There might also be a 2019 edition of Capitole du Libre in Toulouse but I've heard nothing about it (historically, CdL tends to be a last-minute-organized kind of thing).

Also, can you please remove your identifying details so this ticket can be public?

Done.

See above.

Any idea on attendance counts for these events so we can understand what we are approving more? What have we historically done to incite users to try Fedora and contribute? Has it worked?

Take a look at the shipping guidelines to understand timing, as an FYI.

Any idea on attendance counts for these events so we can understand what we are approving more?

The POSS organizers claim 4700 visitors for the last two editions. With the LSM not being held, I'll argue POSS is the biggest FLOSS event in France.

What have we historically done to incite users to try Fedora and contribute?

We've answered questions about the distribution, burnt isos on USB keys, asked people to sign up on fedora-fr.org so they can join the community and gave them directions on how to contact their local LUG when they wanted to meet other Linux users IRL.

Has it worked?

Anecdotal evidence suggests it does. I see some people come back to the booth every year (note that we didn't have a booth last year because we couldn't find a second person to man it during the event) and there's a (small) upswing in account creations after most POSS on the fedora-fr forums.

Wow! that is a big event. I am in favor of shipping swag to the event. I can't wait to see the event report. Do you think there is a way to help those folks become part of the larger Fedora community?

Are you using a Federator to burn the keys?

Do you think there is a way to help those folks become part of the larger Fedora community?

I've always taken the one-step further approch (get people who don't use Fedora to try it, people who use it to help others on the forums, people who help to contribute, ...).

Are you using a Federator to burn the keys?

No, I'm using my laptop. I've seen the Federator at work on the Fedora booth at FOSDEM but no-one in the French community has one, as far as I know.

This event sounds fantastic, +1 for this thicket and @eseyman please don't forget point the people who want to become a contributor to #fedora-join

I'm +1 to this if we keep it in the per-event basis.

+1 from me. Sounds like a worthwhile event.

This is approved. Please open ship request tickets in the fedora-budget repo.

We need it to close this ticket.

Sorry, I forgot to publish this.
The report is at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Paris_Open_Source_Summit_2019#English

I've sent it to the ambassadors mailing list as well as the fr-users one.
