#135 Updating the org chart
Closed: Complete 3 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 4 years ago by ankursinha.

Hello!

Would anyone know where the sources for this awesome Fedora org chart are or how it was generated?

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/orgchart/

It'd be lovely if there was a way for the community to keep it up to date. I was hoping to add NeuroFedora to it, for example. Any way we can make it a living chart?

PS: publicised it here today: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/t/how-is-fedora-organised/1877/2

I figured it was freemind (which is unfortunately, no longer in Fedora). I added NeuroFedora and the Stewardship SIG to it now. Silverblue etc. are still missing, but I wasn't sure where these should go.

Also, freemind said something about updating the file to a new freemind file format. I hope that hasn't changed how nice it looks etc.

@ankursinha can you submit this as a PR against the source repo?

Sure. Here's the PNG export too. If there are any more teams/SIGs to be added, please let me know too and I'll add them before opening the PR also.

I regret to say it was done with proprietary software (Saas) — https://coggle.it/

Ah, lucky that freemind could read it then. I tried to reformat it to make it look like the one from coggle, but I couldnt manage it. Either freemind isn't as flexible, or I just don't know how to use it.

Here's my "prettified" version:

Is it worth looking into making it interactive like apps.fp.o, do you think?

I wonder if it'd really just be best to draw it in Inkscape. Particularly, I like the "curvy" version from coggle because the freemind version looks a little too organized and I think that might give people the wrong impression :)

+1

It really is too organised XD

I thought of an interactive version since we could have short
descriptions for each SIG, and maybe link them to the SIG's landing
pages?

So it'll be a quick way for people to explore the community---maybe even
a replacement for fp.o/join which is quite wordy.

I am not opposed to this being an image map however, I am concerned that it is creating the potential for a lot of maintenance work that we don't really have capacity for.

I am opposed to this being "interactive" like apps.fp.o - I find that site very hard to use and search and the movement is upsetting. That may just be my bias.

If we are going to make this a map, we should consider moving it to a more prominent page - which raises my concerns about information architecture in addition to maintenance.

I can do the inkscape bit. That shouldn't be too hard. Both inkscape and libreoffice draw do "connectors" and all that for such charts.

Are we sure this simplified representation really match our organization? As an example, many groups aren't part of Mindshare and some are not active at all.

Some objects are committees like Council, Mindshare and FESCo. Others are subprojects.
Some have direct cardinalities but most have none. Without saying this is good or bad, I feel like we really are less structured (not only design).

So talking about what I know well: Globalization isn't part of Mindshare and this term isn't well known even by FOSS experts, it's more a way to say i18n & l10n work together, which is true but it's not really a group by itself but a goal. Internationalization sounds closer to FESCo than Mindshare to me. Localization is the opposite, more Mindshare than FESCo. Fedora Language testing group haven't been active for a while now.

From an administrative authority point of view (including how funding is distributed and things like "rights to use the Fedora trademark"), every team in Fedora should either be connected to FESCo, Mindshare, or to the Council directly (as in the Objectives). It's okay if some things (like your i18n and l10n examples) don't fit perfectly in boxes.

Groups that aren't actually active at all are another story and should be removed.

Groups that aren't actually active at all are another story and should be removed.

I think this bit is what @bex refers to when they speak about maintaining the chart.

I agree that this isn't necessarily the best mode to explain how the community works, but at the moment, I'm clutching at straws and this is better than nothing. It has to start somewhere, even if it isn't perfect.

I replied to the websites ticket and we're making progress there:

In short, I'm looking for the easiest ways to make Fedora, the community, more visible to people outside it. Preferably, these are ways that don't require lots of planning and organisation---stuff that a few people can do.

It has to start somewhere, even if it isn't perfect.

I think maybe we should put this statement somewhere in big letters. :)

@ankursinha any update?

Sorry, my inkscape etc skills aren't up to the mark at the moment. I'll hopefully get it done this week.

I've gone running to the design team for help now:

https://pagure.io/design/issue/650

A couple of quick points, looking at the map...

  • ARM is no longer a secondary arch
  • There's also a new IoT edition

Nice! Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the work!
Can you please:
- remove "globalization", " language testing group" and "Zanata" (which ne=
ver was a fedora project)?
- rename "Translation" group into "Localization"=2E

Could you please modify the svg source as required? It shouldn't be too hard now that it's all set up in an inkscape file.

I'll put it in place in the main docs once any updates like that settle down.

You are right, sorry, fine for me, I can edit the SVG on Sunday (no compute=
r until then)

Here are the files:
fedora_org_chart-20191008.pngfedora_org_chart-20191008.svg

I see i18n as a Fesco related group, but even if I follow what they do, I'm not part of it to decide where they should be displayed on this (that's the reason why we had the Globalization thing, to link Fesco+Mindshare or Technical+People for a global impact)

It's just me or CommOps is not included?

Hi folks! This is really great, and exactly what I have been looking for to get familiar with an conclusive overview of Fedora. Is the file @jibecfed uploaded most recent and up to date? @mattdm

I think you can safely assume so Marie=2E This graph is really rarely updat=
ed=2E

@riecatnor oh good, you found the ticket. There are probably some things to update, but it's an improvement over what's there.

It's just me or CommOps is not included?

I couldnt find it either. Could you add it in there @bt0dotninja so we have the updated version?

We can them update the file in the docs---this ticket is now quite old XD

Hey peeps! I have coincidentally been working on an update & redesign of the org chart. I have shown it to a couple folks to get feedback already, but it needs more input. See below, please provide a review.

I propose closing this ticket as a duplicate of Fedora-Council/tickets#360.

@jflory7 mindshare committee agrees! And will provide comments on the Council ticket if desired.
