The Fedora project is looking for mentors for project for the next round of Outreachy. For those who aren't familiar, Outreachy is a paid internship inspired by Google Summer of Code for people underrepresented in tech. Interns work remotely with mentors on projects ranging from programming, user experience, documentation, illustration and graphical design, to data science.

Every idea or project needs one or two responsible mentors to teach and help the intern. Please note that Outreachy applicants are expected to make a first contribution to the project they are applying for so mentors need to have proper tasks defined for applicants to work on. Mentors should be able to commit at least 5 hours a week on most weeks from the beginning of the six-week application period (February 13, 2018) through the end of the three-month internship (End of August). You should have a real interest in their success and be engaged and excited about the project. Take a look at the Outreachy Info for Mentors for more information. Former Outreachy mentors and interns from various communities and projects

To become a mentor, come up with an idea or project to help the intern with. It should be completed in about three months. Open an issue on https://pagure.io/mentored-projects with the subject "Outreachy project - project name". Under the "Type" drop down menu, select "Outreachy - Proposed Project" to get the application template. Please tag the issue "Outreachy".
Outreachy intern applications open February 12, 2018 for the upcoming round.

Past Outreachy interns with Fedora have worked on a variety of projects including but not limited to Fedora Hubs Design, PatternFly web development and Kernel Tools.

Posted a draft for the commblog, once that goes live I'll send something to devel list as well.

@bex was there a plan for sharing projects at all between GSoC and Outreachy?

I am in the room with them, I'll prompt them on this.

Nothing seems to have come up organically/formally. I suspect the most likely to share projects are the ones being proposed by @pbrobinson

I got a reminder this morning that before Fedora can be listed on the Outreachy website we must have mentors and projects registered there as well. This means we need to formally decide which GSoC projects to submit for Outreachy.

@labbott After our conversation in Brno it sounded like we were keeping them separated. I thought infra's projects were going to Outreachy.

It sounded like there were ideas but I haven't seen a concrete proposal yet. I followed up again this morning.

https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/outreachy-mentors-summer-2018/ is up. Feel free to spread this around. Note we currently have 0 confirmed projects for Outreachy (I suspect the infra project is not going to happen)

Closing this ticket since the CFP is now now out.
