#130 New Mentored Project rep to Mindshare
Closed: fixed 2 years ago by siddharthvipul1. Opened 2 years ago by siddharthvipul1.

Folks,
It's been a while since I have been serving the Mindshare committee occupying mentored-project seat. It's not supposed to be a "lead" thing.. but just a voice acting as a bridge between a group putting effort and the community leadership committee.

I have a few things coming in my life that I know will take a huge effort to excel at. A new time and energy consuming effort also introduces re-prioritization of the existing responsibilities.
I know it will be extremely challenging for me to focus on this and do even okayish[tm] to justify this seat. Also, I need to stop licking the cookie!

So, I want to open this ticket to discuss a new mentored-project rep to Mindshare!
You are interested, comment! you know someone interested? reach out to them and ask them to comment!
You are unsure if you can do this, reach out to me (or comment)!
I am looking forward to hearing from you all

Having worked alongside you, @sumantrom, @jonatoni, and @riecatnor for some time, I think I have picked up the necessary things pertaining to mentorship within a community like ours. I have also recently started the people side of the community more with managing projects and establishing communication so I like to think that this would be an opportunity for me to share my perspective on mentorship and of learning tons from others while doing so.

That being mentioned, I have a few more names, apart from my own's to suggest who have been instrumental in mentoring within the Fedora Join SIG alongside the two of us. I would really love to know if they would be interested in taking this up and making it reach new heights. What do you say, @ankursinha @bt0dotninja @alciregi @hhlp? You folks have been great mentors to me and I like to think that you would be great at this thing.

Sad to see you go, dude but all the VERYYYY best for whatever comes next in your life! <3

Thanks for all your work here @siddharthvipul1 . I'd say @t0xic0der is an excellent candidate, so I'd throw all my support behind them.

I'd count myself out of the running here too. I'm having a hard time keeping up with my current Fedora responsibilities, so I cannot see myself taking on more in the short term future :(

I would like to step up and take this opportunity. I have run Fedora's GSoC for some time and onboarded several folks. My current focus is mentorship, which aligns clearly with what I want to do.

Hi folks! Happy to see the enthusiasm here :D I have some thoughts I'd like to share.

I'd like to remind the group about the time commitment that being a Mindshare rep takes. There is a weekly meeting, commenting on tickets, staying on top of any mindshare things on discussion.fpo, participating in writing the quarterly report, any virtual F2F, as well as participation at virtual & local events etc. Participation levels will vary from person to person, naturally. To be honest, I'd like to see a bit more participation from the current folks on Mindshare, but most of them have a bunch of other commitments in Fedora.. It's hard to ask for more when folks are already giving so much. Which leads me to my next thought:

I think that while @t0xic0der & @sumantrom are both great candidates, and fully capable of holding this seat, I am also aware of the other Fedora related commitments you both have- that are heavy and very much appreciated!! You are both on the Council, involved in various other projects/objectives, and have day jobs that are related to or directly working on Fedora. I am not giving anyone a -1, I am attempting to provide a gentle reminder about the commitment and effort this will take. Additionally, I hope to provide some food for thought about making sure you are both keeping enough time for your personal lives and your overall well being.

With mentorship being a focus for Fedora's long term strategy, I think there is plenty to do around Mentored Projects that is not the Mindshare seat. I'd also really like to see the Mindshare rep opportunity go to someone newer who can weigh in with fresh perspectives, skills, and energy. That person should work closely with a handful of others (like everyone on this thread :D) on GSoC, Outreachy, the Fedora Mentor Summit, and researching new mentored programs for Fedora to be involved in.

Hello hello!

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring for this :)

I joined Fedora as an intern. Since then, I have participated in different Fedora events, volunteered for the Fedora Mentor Summit and most recently, I was an Outreachy mentor. Having been involved in both sides of a mentored project, I believe I can bring a new, fresh perspective to the role. I have incredible gratitude and passion for mentored projects in Fedora. Being a mentee in Fedora changed my life, so I know the importance of this seat and the impact it can have on both the mentees and the Project.

Although it's not been long since I started contributing to Fedora (2020), I know I can learn and grow along the way and do justice to this role

sorry for the late response folks..

I agree with Marie!
With @t0xic0der and @sumantrom already being in Council,
AND already involved in mentored-project as mentors and admins, it might be good to have a fresh perspective and additional set of hands.
Again, what I wrote in the ticket while opening, it's not a lead position but someone who will be working with different stakeholders.
For GSoC, it's Sumantro who has been running behind-the-scenes,
for Outreachy, It's Marie and
for Fedora Mentor Summit, It's Jona and I

I think Smera would be a good candidate.
We also should work on how we rotate the seats to give more people a chance to be a committee members.
@riecatnor, what would be the next steps to have someone onboarded (and myself removed?)

@smeragoel by my count you have been contributing to Fedora since early 2020, so that's over two years now :tada:

@siddharthvipul1 aiui, there is no formal process in place for the mentored projects rep to step down/fill the seat- am I correct? My thought is we can do this one of two ways...
1. Since we have three folks who self nominated, we have a discussion (on thread is okay, or we could have a irc meet or call) about who should take the seat, and we come to a decision as a team.
2. We put it to a vote. I think we would put this vote to anyone involved in Mentored Projects and Mindshare. I would put it to those two groups as their is only a handful of folks working on Mentored Projects (which would make the vote very small). Mindshare will be directly impacted, so it would make sense to involve them in the decision if we need more votes.

I'd like to hear from @t0xic0der @sumantrom & @smeragoel about how they'd like to proceed, since they are the candidates for the seat.

I think we have an accord here. @smeragoel is the new face; I am sure she will make a difference!
I would like to be more around the Ambassador process as I have spent a ton of time revamping (Writing docs, making process, onboarding, mentoring and much more). I would like to lead and mentor "new-folks" and use my expertise to work on the Ambassador seat.

I like to think that @smeragoel would make a great Mindshare representative for Mentored Projects. That being said, please feel free to reach out to me and @sumantrom as and when you need assistance with coordinating the related tasks and we would be glad to be of help.

If we don't, I say that now's the best time to discuss and establish processes around it.

Thank you @sumantrom and @t0xic0der for your support. I'll definitely be reaching out to you for your super valuable advice.

we seem to have an unanimous decision :)
I will work with Smera in onboarding her
