#856 [RFE] support livemedia-creator --make-appliance and depreciate appliance-tools
Opened 6 years ago by kevin. Modified 2 years ago

livemedia-creator now has support for making appliances. See:
https://github.com/weldr/lorax/blob/master/docs/livemedia-creator.rst

It would be great to add this and remove the old appliance-tools support, this would allow us to no longer need livecd-tools or appliance-creator and instead use livemedia-creator which we already have for making live images.

Thanks!

Please do not drop the appliance-tools / livecd-tools support in Koji, as there are people who do use Koji to produce media that cannot or don't want to depend on Anaconda (and its fickleness).

@ngompa Could you go into more detail about the barriers you have to using livemedia?

@mikem I'm using livecd-creator and appliance-creator for producing images for Mageia. We don't have Anaconda, which is a core requirement for Lorax, the underlying dependency of livemedia-creator. Mageia uses DrakX as the installer framework, and I intend to introduce Calamares as an alternative installer framework there.

Cf. https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_6_Release_Notes#LiveCD_Tools

As for Fedora based images, livecd-creator / appliance-creator was the only tool that could properly exclude packages and groups of packages from the media. This is used by people to produce their own custom, minimalistic media (for example, @kkofler's Kannolo is a Fedora Remix that relies on this behavior).

Also, people producing images that do not use Anaconda in Fedora generally prefer to use livecd-creator instead of livemedia-creator (Kannolo is one that uses Calamares, and I've got a PantheonOS that uses it too.)

@ngompa what about further support of these? Is kiwi taking over or is there still some benefit in these tools?
