#31 Write elevator pitch for Fedora i3 Spin for spins.fp.o
Closed: complete 3 years ago by jflory7. Opened 3 years ago by jflory7.

Summary

Write an "elevator pitch" for the Fedora i3 Spin, highlighting any key features or usability highlights

Background

We will publish a new entry on the Fedora Spins website for the i3 Spin. We need to write an overview about the Spin that will appear alongside the links to downloading. It is important to use simple language and write clearly – you only get one first impression.

Details

We need help from someone to write the elevator pitch for the Spin. This is different from the Design Goals of the SIG. The elevator pitch should be written with both possible new i3 users and experienced i3 power-users in mind.

The SIG can help workshop a draft with someone who is willing to take lead on this work.

Outcome

The Fedora i3 Spin entry on spins.fp.o clearly explains the i3 Spin and its unique features from other Fedora offerings

Below are a few notes I made. Perhaps they would be useful to the group as we prepare these pitches. I drafted a few "taglines" and a few "pitches" for us to evaluate, mash up, re-write, etc.

Tagline options

(for https://spins.fedoraproject.org/)

  • A complete desktop experience with a tiling window manager
  • The Fedora desktop experience featuring a tiling window manager
  • A tiling window manager with minimalistic user interface
  • A Fedora desktop for users who prefer a minimalistic user interface and keyboard-driven workflow

Pitch options

(for, e.g., https://spins.fedoraproject.org/en/i3/)

The i3 window manager is a popular tiling window manager designed for users who prefer minialistic user interfaces. Specifically intended for use without a mouse, touchpad, or other pointing device, the i3 desktop is a favorite among users with keyboard-driven workflows. The Fedora i3 spin aims to make this window manager accessible and appealing to both novice and advanced users.

The Fedora i3 spin aims to make the popular i3 tiling window manager both accessible to novices and appealing to advanced users who prefer not to use a mouse, touchpad, or other pointing device to interact with their desktops. Featuring lightweight applications for web browsing, text editing, and media playback, the Fedora i3 spin offers a complete desktop experience with a minimalistic user interface.

Fedora i3 features lightweight applications for web browsing, text editing, and media playback—all packaged with care to make the i3 window manager accessible to novice users.

@semioticrobotic thanks so much for your time on this.

  • The Fedora desktop experience featuring a tiling window manager

I like this one the most, but excluding the word "Desktop". We need to remember that the tiling windows managers goes with a different experience than the Desktop Metaphor

I like this, with the same comment, excluding the word "Desktop" maybe replacing it with "GUI" or plain "Graphical"

Thanks for your feedback @x3mboy!

I agree "desktop" is not ideal. I would have preferred something like "workstation," but I understand we like to reserve use of that term for speaking exclusively about Fedora Workstation, so I was grasping for something else. I could also just as easily have used "computer," I suppose!

@semioticrobotic I think for the Tagline we could go like:

  • The Fedora operating system experience featuring a tiling window manager

And for the Pitch:

  • The Fedora i3 spin aims to make the popular i3 tiling window manager both accessible to novices and appealing to advanced users who prefer not to use a mouse, touchpad, or other pointing device to interact with their environment. Featuring lightweight applications for web browsing, text editing, and media playback, the Fedora i3 spin offers a complete experience with a minimalistic user interface.

wdyt?

Whatever works for the group works for me! Thanks for your edits and guidance, @x3mboy.

Thank You @semioticrobotic and @x3mboy for working on it, It looks awesome. :)

Discussed in 2021-01-19 meeting.

We approved the tagline and elevator pitch for the i3 Spin page on fedora-websites! I'll follow up with the Websites Team to confirm.

To be clear, this is what I am sending to the team (I made minor English edits):

Since we passed this to the Websites Team, I actually don't think there is much more to do here. I am going to close this ticket as complete. Any follow-ups should go to fedora-websites#1056.

Closing! :ocean: :surfer:
