I feel it would be good to review the default fonts in Fedora @fonts. Particularly extra fonts listed there by default which are not required by a specific language.
Latest is https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/blob/main/f/comps-f35.xml.in#_1551
Current default fonts listed are:
aajohan-comfortaa-fonts abattis-cantarell-fonts dejavu-sans-fonts dejavu-sans-mono-fonts dejavu-serif-fonts google-noto-emoji-color-fonts google-noto-sans-cjk-ttc-fonts google-noto-sans-gurmukhi-fonts google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts jomolhari-fonts julietaula-montserrat-fonts khmer-os-system-fonts liberation-mono-fonts liberation-sans-fonts liberation-serif-fonts lohit-assamese-fonts lohit-bengali-fonts lohit-devanagari-fonts lohit-gujarati-fonts lohit-kannada-fonts lohit-odia-fonts lohit-tamil-fonts lohit-telugu-fonts paktype-naskh-basic-fonts pt-sans-fonts sil-abyssinica-fonts sil-mingzat-fonts sil-nuosu-fonts sil-padauk-fonts smc-meera-fonts stix-fonts thai-scalable-waree-fonts
Discussed briefly 22 Feb:
<petersen> I thought it would be a good exercise to review and document the default (installed) fonts Maybe we could have a wiki page for that too and also consider if any of them don't need to be default for F35 <vishal_vvr> petersen, +1 <petersen> It would also be interesting if any of the language fonts are not listed on https://tagoh.fedorapeople.org/fonts/status/34.html <tagoh> +1
I created https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/I18N/F34_Fonts by hand as a start.
I think aajohan-comfortaa-fonts and julietaula-montserrat-fonts could be dropped from @fonts - they seem to have been added as part of design-suite perhaps.
Should we consult desktop list first or even WS WG for these?
Also pt-sans-fonts does not appear in https://tagoh.fedorapeople.org/fonts/status/34.html so it could also be a candidate for dropping. Any others?
Thank you for your dedication. Have a nice day!
Also we should consider whether to drop adobe-source-code-pro-fonts?
I posted a mail to devel/desktop lists asking about aajohan-comfortaa-fonts and julietaula-montserrat-fonts first of all.
I opened https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/pull-request/659
Next step is to investigate whether pt-sans-fonts or adobe-source-code-pro-fonts could be dropped from default fonts or not.
https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/pull-request/659 was quickly merged at the beginning of last week.
I sent a mail to devel/fonts/trans lists asking about pt-sans-fonts.
Unfortunately I had sent to the old devel list... Last week I forwarded the mail to devel list.
Plan to open a PR either before or after branching.
I opened the PR https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/pull-request/666 for making pt-sans-fonts optional
pt-sans-fonts
Also opened https://pagure.io/fedora-workstation/issue/236 to propose dropping adobe-source-code-pro-fonts default from @gnome
adobe-source-code-pro-fonts
@gnome
The Workstation ticket generated some good discussion, concluding with proposal to move F36 to Noto fonts as default for apps and UI.
This ticket can probably closed now - I am pretty happy with the outcomes: we can do another iteration after F36 or so.
