#466 Travel + Accomodation subsidy for Sarup Banskota (banas) to FUDCon Beijing, May 2014
Closed: Fixed None Opened 10 years ago by sarupbanskota.

Hi everyone!

I'm an ex-gsoc student with Fedora and part of design team. I was at fossasia when Tuan mentioned about FudCon Beijing. At that time, my exams were scheduled in a way that it conflicted with the fudcon dates. However, it just got revised recently and now my exams get over a few days before the event. I did write to Christopher some time back about my interest in speaking after the deadline was over, but he probably missed my email.

  • What do you need covered? (Please estimate the costs in USD: hotel $X, travel $Y.)

I'll find it difficult to pay for the plane and accommodation, hence opening this ticket as a request for funds. I've summarized the estimated costs for me below, should I get funded:
I live in Coimbatore, and will need return to Kolkata.
To save costs, I'll travel from Coimbatore to Bangalore by bus (8hrs) and then catch a plane from there.
It's cheaper to book return tickets to Bangalore and then book a plane from Bangalore to Kolkata.
I need help with it, but I haven't covered accommodation here since I'm not sure what's being planned, but I'm ok with anything at all.
*''' Total approximate travel costs: 630 USD + accomodation costs'''.

  • If we cannot provide a full subsidy, will a partial subsidy be helpful? (Yes/No?)

Yes, but I'll find it difficult to pay for the remainder, since I don't earn and I'm still in college.

  • If Yes, specify the minimum amount you need covered to facilitate your attendance.

500 USD.

  • What will you accomplish by being at FUDCon? (Please be as specific as possible, since this is the most important factor in granting requests.)

'''I would like to attend for the following reasons:'''
I'm working on GlitterGallery, and wanted to speak about our plans for the summer and see if anyone has suggestions for improvements. Part of the summer plans is to build a collaborative whiteboard, something that hasn't been done a lot before, so I could probably get some expert insight there.
Led by Ankur, we had a meeting at #fedora-join, where one of the major discussions was about revamping the experience for newbies to Fedora. I've been discussing with people about this since LGM this year, FUDCon Beijing would help Ankur and I meet and work on it together.
I wanted to build a platform where people could archive intelligent questions asked about Fedora and open source in general - this would be also serve as an FAQ to newcomers and reference to say, new Fedora ambassadors to look for intelligent answers. Since the event will be attended by many ambassadors, it would be the right time for me to pitch my thoughts.
Help Ankur with introductory ROS sessions.
* As I always do, if there's a lot of student participation, I'm open to doing a "getting started with FOSS techniques" workshop to get people started with the non-programmatic stuff that acts as a hurdle to them before contributing to FOSS.

'''More reasons (personal):'''
My exams get over four days before the event (yay!) and so I'll be completely free to participate and even help organize if needed.
I'll have a summer vacation ahead of me to implement anything I get involved with at the event.

  • If you are requesting airfare, include complete flight information such as flight numbers, desired departure and arrival airports, and times. Also let us know if you have specific time restrictions.

I'll attach screenshots of the search results in this thread.

  • Do you need a visa or other official processing before you can attend FUDCon? If so, approximately how long does that processing take?

Yup, it takes about 10 days.

  • Include any additional, relevant information.

We are sorry to inform you that we are not able to provide your subsidy after careful review of your application due to limited budget of the event. We however still would like you to visit Beijing and join the event. We hope you can find other ways to get sponsored for your journey. Sorry for the decision and hope you can understand.

cool, Good luck with the event anyway! Please close this issue.
